Arizona, Cali fornia, Seattle, Washington State, Idaho, Oregon and Oregon State. Up and Down > The Avenue By Don .Moffatt ! Merry Christmas to each and everyone of you. This may seem a little early to be extending greetings of the season, but it just so happens that this is the last issue prior to the happy day. 1 have taken considerable pride in our town this past week. I see where there are more lights being strung up about our city. These, as 1 said before, make for a more pleasing appearance. 1 have this week chosen to reprint an article on Christmas which tells a story of this joy ous season much better than 1 can. and I hope you enjoy read ing it as much as 1 have: Would you ask about Christ mas. little ones, of an old man who counts more holidays than he can remember? Memories? Recollections? How it used to be; A Christmas of old? Cap ture. if you will, my children, the distant ¡x*al of a church bell; the smell of pine, clean and fresh in a wintry wind . . . sleigh bells ringing, carolers singing, and the jingle of harn ess up and down the road. "In retrospect, how clearly the long, lean spire of the vil lage church still casts a moon lit shadow u|»in the white, white world. How quick to the nostrils is the smell of burning wax, and of green boughs, so freshly cut; and holly and mistletoe . . . and the first recollection of "Silent Night;" how many years, how long ago? "In the catalog of Christmas past, a small cabin nestles against the foot of a great mountain, a mountain of forest green and wintry white. "In an auspicious corner, near a wanning hearth, the Good Book rests on a small oaken stand. "On a magic Eve. against a background of red berries and fresh mountain greenery, a bearded patriarch turns, so tenderly, those time-worn pages. “A voice as gruff as the dis tant thunder modulates to soft ness matching the sound of a morning wind in the pines. "In hushed enthusiasm, wee cherubs scatter about the floor, soaking up every familiar syl lable, as if it might never be heard again . . . "For Unto You This Day Is Bom a Saviour. . . .” "And from the flickering glow of the fireside, the magic eye of the mind brings forth that vision a stable, cold and for lorn; and yet. so seemingly dif ferent. warm and bright, alive with a greatness that is to be woven indelibly into the net- work of all things past and p re sent. "The first thought, the first vision of the Birth at Bethele- hem;! How it stays forever. overshadowing myriad thoughts and recollections of other Christmases that flare across the mind's eye like the riffled pages of a book' "How did it used to be? The Christmases? It used to be; it is; it remains the same. Oirist- mas has not changed; shall not. The world moves on. as it must. But, we cannot we dare not, change the Christmas. It is the birthday of Christ. "We may bow our heads in the loftiest cathedral or in a weather-beaten church by the side of the road. We may raise our voices to the mightiest raft ers. or kneel reverently on a floor of dirt—but we observe neither a "new" nor an "old" Christmas. We observe THE CHRISTMAS. "There is but ONE Christ mas, ONE observance—one re cognition within each individual heart that long, long ago, in the simplest of surroundings, in Bethlehem there was bom a Sa viour who lived the life of su preme example and who died that others might find everlast ing peace. "May this true spirit of Christmas abide in the hearts of all, for now, and for all the Christmases yet to come."
