Much of the music enjoyed by residents here last year will be included. The choir is under the direc tion of Mrs. Don Sheythe. Santiam Wins MacLaren Tournament Burton Boroughs Santiam Wol verines came out on top in the two-day basketball tournament held at MacLaren last week. Santiam won their game from MacLaren Friday night 67-52 In the final game of the holiday basketball tournament. Sheridan took third after edg ing Gervais 42-41 in the consola tion game Friday night. In the championship game Santiam rolled to a 21-10 first quarter lead and led 49-29 at the end of three periods. The Wol verines dominated both back- boards throughout the contest. The only time MacLaren made a fight of It was in the final per iod when the Hawks potted 21 points against a reserve team. Guidance SessionToBe HeldatSUHS A guidance session covering preparation for college or other training beyond the high school level wUl be held for the stu dents of Santiam Union High school today, December 17 at 8:45 a. m. Principal James B. Putman announced that a visit ing team from the state system of higher education has been In vited to conduct the meeting. Representatives from the state schools will explain their respec tive academic offerings and point up each institution’s speci fic requirements. Opportunity for questions by students is giv en to provide individual guid ance. The importance of educa tion beyond high school years will be explained. A description of what that “adequate prepara tion” entails, career opportuni ties. costs, scholarships, and mechanics of school application and entrance will be stressed. These informative sessions are conducted annually in the high school as part of the regular guilance program. They repre sent a combined effort by the state system of higher educa tion and the high school to bet ter prepare high school students for their future careers. The program presents complete in formation on the educational op portunities provided at public expense within the state. Mill City Volley Ball Team Wins Alice Smith, volleyball in- structor at the grade school arr- nounced this week that the sea son had ended with two wins and six losses. The last game was with St. Mary’s with a score of 35-31 in favor of Mill City. The elementary school boys played two games last Friday with the B team kiting to Mari- Linn with a score of 19-17 and the A team winning with a score of 23-14. Homes are also being decorat ed for the annual contest and windows are already showing Christmas trees. Christmas pro grams now scheduled are as follows: Detroit public school, Deceni- ber 22 at 7:30. Idanha Community church, December 20 at 7:30. Detroit Church of Christ, De cember 20 at 7:30. The big tree across from the Shell Station in Detroit has been colorfully decorated for a Com munity Christmas tree. The City, under the supervision of C. E. Mason, street commissioner, and city maintenance man, Art Hedge, had a crew of men at work cutting down a huge fir tree in the street near the Charles French home. During the last storm the tree swayed dangerously and many banches were strewn about, so the decision was made by the street department to remove the hazard. The beautiful old tree was a “twin tree” and was 180 feet tall and about four and a half feet in diameter. It was believed tn bo «bout 94 years old. In early November a petition signed bv more than 300 resi dents of the Aumsville area was sent to the railroad and various governmental bodies requesting traffic signals at the crossing. A special meeting of the Aumsville City council was called Monday evening to fur ther contact the State Highway and Southern Pacific asking for immediate safety measures at the crossing. There have been several fatal accidents at the crossing and numerous collisions with trains over a period of years. A num ber of people in this area have had “near misses" at this place. To date there has been over $13.000 collected from the sale. Seventy-four per cent of all money raised remains in the county to help carry on the year round work of the or ganization in research, health education and rehabilitation on tuberculosis. Mrs. Kanoff stated also that TB is still the No. 1 Infectious disease and that a new eaae nt TB is reported in the United States every six minutes and urged everyone to please send in their contribution whether it be large or small.
