Mr. Bibler. my route supervisor for the Capital Journal, picked me up at 6:45 a. m and took me to Salem, for the start of one of the best days of my life. At the Capital Journal office I met several other winners in this subscrip- tion contest, and 18 of us were taken to the airport. There we were given tickets for the Portland trip, and I was first one on the plane. I took a seat next to the window in the rear of the plane, because up front all you can see is the wings when you look down. After all passengers were on. we rolled down to the end of the run way to warm up the motors. This was my first airplane trip, and I had some funny feelings, which got funnier as we left the ground, but it all left after we quit rising—except when we hit airpockets. The Steward ess brought us hot chocolate and gum. Everything looked very small when I looked down and 1 asked her how high New Cafe Hours at the Riverview. We are now open from 4 P. M. to 2:30 A. M. Facts always speak best and louder than a few people trying to get something for nothing. To begin with the people in Elk horn have poles set by their doors, all they have to do is to put telephane wires on these poles and run their lines thru the Lyons exchange. This is really in the Lyons franchise or nearly so and should be included in it. Also their is a good hard road to this little community, they are well provided for and need nothing else. The People’s Consumer’s Power engineers went over this route so hotly disputed by the Valley Tele phone Co., and said in a letter to us that the terrain was too rough and costly and not feasible for a line thru here. 1 take it that these peo ple know what they are talking about. I also think it would not be feasible, as a taxpayer to use govern ment money to build a line where it is so costly and not feasable. Also, we simply told the telephone company not to build a line on our private property without an eaae- ment and offered them a lease on line right for two dollars per year, but it seems they want us to be San ta Claus for them. I am quite sure they have more money than we do Now, at last the truth about this road, and this is facts to be found in the court records. At one time some years after the statehood of Oregon, some people wanted a road up this hill, so they went on record as petitioning the court to view out a possible way for a road This the court evidently did sad some surveyors went along on the trip and made survey with the min utes and degrees and number of chains in every direction, *> that there need not be any question as to where this survey went It begins I understand, by the Gates Fire Hall and would take in the Gates Fire Hall, the Post-office and store I think. The follows up the country. But, the nigger In the woodpile, is that so far as I have seen no pap er has as yet been found where the court acted on this petition or acquir ed a right of way. Even if they do find it, and follow the survey the road will not be the rock road which now The United States National Bank Or PORTLAND RESOURCES Cash on Hand and Duo from Banks.................................. $ 155,197,135.53 United States Government Bonds...................................... 246,823,885.60 Municipal and Other Bonds................................................ 80,731,848.67 Loans and Discounts—Net.............. 393,045,982.98 Stock In Federal Reserve Bank.............. 1,380,000.00 Bank Premises (Including Branches)........................... 13,062,819 99 Customers' Liability on Acceptance«................................... 23,549 86 Interest Earned........... ................ ............ 3,352,796.43 Other Resources............... ..................... ..... 746,247.61 $ 894,364,269 67 LIABILITIES Capital.................................................... | 23,000,000 00 Surplus.................................................... 23,000,000 00 Undivided Profits................................... 24,085,571.91 S 70,085,571.91 7,095,808 04 Reserves for Interest, Taxes, etc.......................................... 23,549 86 Acceptances ............. •••••••••••••••••....................... 747,500.00 Dividends Declared................ •••••••••••.......... ............ 802,973,949.68 Deposits ..................................... ......... 7,559,651.57 Interest Collected Net Earned............................................. 5,878,23861 Other Liabilities.............................................. .......................
