______________________________________ OX THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY — GATEWAY TO THE HEART OF_N ATI’RE’S EMPIRE VOLUME XV GATES—The Gates Women’s Club this week says it is grateful to each and everyone who helped or contrib uted in anyway toward the Santiam Canyon Fair. It was a grand ex ample of the fine results which can be obtained when all work together. The Saturday night program had included an entry from each town in the Canyon, but due to unforseen illnesses a Mill City trio was not heard, and Ellen Howell of Gates was unable to do her imitation of Elvis Pressley. Sandra and Dawn Hellemn of Lyons entertained with several accordion, song and tap num bers, and Serena Hawthorne of De troit got a big hand for her Charles ton dance. Princesses of the Stayton Bean Festival were presented by Ed Spitz, and Mrs. Walter Brisbin pre sented each girl with a gift. Mayor W. R. Hutcheson was master of ceremonies. Dancing both inside the building and outdoors was enjoyed later. The plate design contest sponsored by the Gates Women’s club, was won by Mrs. Joseph Bowes, and a prize of $2 presented. The beauty and ap propriateness of all the designs en tered made the judging difficult, but in due time it is hoped the winning design can be made commercially, for a 10-inch plate to be sold here, ad vertising the happiness highway. No. 22 from Salem to Bend A picture will be presented soon. The winner of the Firemen's Aux iliary quilt was Mrs. Helen Kanoff of Mill City and Mrs. Mabel Taylor of Dallas, won the oil painting made by Mrs. Lillie Lake. Mrs. Rudy Tohl. Mill City, was presented the stain less steel silverware set. The covered wagon made and en tered by Ed Kadin of Gates, won many compliments. He plans to show it in the July 4th parade at Mill City. Several children had their pic ture taken in the “driver’s seat.’’ Flash bulbs were popping regularly throughout the gym on all three days. The Horseless Carriage club which arrived early Sunday, some from Silverton was much enjoyed. Alongside some of the 1959 jobs the old cars looked like watch fobs. The menfolks, mamas and the children were dressed as in day* gone by, derbies on the men and boys, large hats, decked with flowers and tied down with scarfs, for the ladies, and bonnets, full skirts and some pant alettes for the girls. Many attended the morning hurch service, and the Caravan departed a bit sooner than planned, when rain and heavy showers started about 4 p. m. Hundreds of people saw the Fair and much praise was received by the Gates Women's club mem bers who sponsored it. The odd piece of machinery en tered at the Fair by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Kelly of Mill City, was iden tified by George (Friday) Neitling of Lyons, as a “bone crusher.’, He said he had run one many years ago. Although this had been shown be fore, this no one had been able to ' name it.
