The seaaon is rapidly approaching
when farmers and home gardeners
throughout Oregon will be replenish
ing supplies of insecticides and other
pest control products.
We in public health don’t like to
constantly cry “wolf” , about the
danger* in various compounds, but
the number of accidental poisonings
during recent years indicate* the
need for better public understanding
of the potentially-iethal nature of in
secticides.
Some of these products are so
dangerous that a small amount of the
concentrate spilled on the skin can
cause death in a few minutes. The
same concentrate in dust form can ■
quickly cause illness and possibly
death if breathed into the lung3.
The State Board of Health, in co
operation with the chemical industry
' and dealers, has succeeded in having
the most dangerous of these com-

I ening market, but they are still avail-
, able to farmers and other large
| users. In the hands of an experienced
1 operator properly clothed and mask
ed, such insecticides are reasonably
safe and highly effective.

a fall, a collision is seldom
announced. So be prepared. At least one member
of every family should have a working knowledge
of first aid. There are books on the subject and
the American Red Cross gives classes where such
information and training can be acquired. We
recommend that you, or someone in your house
hold, acquire the know-how. Another worthy
recommendation Is to maintain a supply of first-
atd medications on hand at all times—antiseptic,
gauze bandages, adhesive tape, alcohol, soothing
creams, etc. The cost is small and we’ll be glad
to assist you in your »election.
