1958 Gas Tax Collections
Show Slight Increase
Oregon gasoline tax collections last
year increased nearly two per cent,
the Department of Motor Vehicles
reported today.
At the same time, the department
said an estimate of travel for the
year, based on gasoline sales, indi
cated that 7*4 billion miles were driv
en on the state’s streets and high
ways.
Despite this fact, the state’s mile
age death rate, a figure which com
pares miles driven with number of
people killed in accidents, dropped
from 6.3 deaths per 100 million miles
in 1957 to 6-0 last year.
The state collected $37,814,892 in'
gasoline tax during the year and
through the end of December had re
funded $3,258,674 to non-highway us
ers.
Except for administrative expense,
whi h last year was less than a fourth
of one per cent of the amount collect
ed, the gasoline tax is earmarked for
the highway fund. Since its inception
in 1919, the law has made possible
turning over more than $500 million
dollars to the highway fund.
Officials said they though the re
cent gasoline price war may have af
fected gasuline
sales considerably
more than some thought because the
December increase in gallonage and
mileage was higher than normal.
A comparison of tax receipts for
r, 1.•.'>?, with December, 1958, I,
showed an 11.88% increase. The two
previous months, O tober and Nov
ember, had recorded increases of five
and two pr cent, respectively. Other
months w.th increases were January,
February, March, May and Septem
ber.
