Oregon highway traffic increased
9.7 per cent during October 1958,
compared to October 1957, according
to the State Highway Department's
monthly count recorded at 63 locations
throughout the state.
October was the first month to show
an increase over 1957 since May, when
the count was 1 per ent greater than
May of 1957, and the only substantial
increase since January.
For the first 10 months of the year,
1958 remained ahead of 1957 by 0.7
per cent with urban traffic up 2.9 per
cent for the same period.
The increase in traffic during Oct
ober was partly due to the onenir g of
the deer season. Maximum daily )
tr ffic oc.urred at most rural loca-1
lions on Oct' ber 3rd. the day prior to
the opening of the season.
While the beach routes indicated a
seasonal decline, the over-all traffic
trend along 101 sh >wed an increase
over the same per od in 1957 with
Winchester Bay reporting an increa e
of 8 per cent.
Department figures a so reveal’d
thit Oregon gasoline consumption in
creased 4.21 per cent during Septem
ber 1958, as compared to September
1957. For the first 9 months of th-
year, gasoline consumption was up
0.59 per <ent.
