Domm medical director in the western home office of the Prudential Insurance Co., declared yesterday. Anthough safety organizations and departments of public health are carrying on campaigns calculated to reduce deaths from drowning he con tinued, parental protection and edu cation are the most effective safety devices. In addition to the hazards of swim ming, parents should direct their at tention to other water dangers such as wading pools, lily pools, water filled excavations, irrigation ditches, I wells, cisterns and even the family I bathtub. “Drownings are the leading cause of accidental death among children I five to fourteen years of age,” Dr. Domm pointed out. “In addition, children under five years of age make 1 up ten per cent of all drowning». These figures add up to more than 2,100 young lives lost needlessly each year.” He said that prevention of drown- I ing from birth to five years of age depends primarily upon protection. “During this period the child can be taught in his bath respect for wat er rather than fear or indifference to its potentialities,” Dr. Domm said. “He can learn that the untrained hu- | man is not unsinkable and that fluid in the eyes, mouth and a!r passages ! may not be pleasant." To reduce the number of drownings in the five to fourteen year old group, principle reliance must be on teach- I ing, according to the medical director. “Children should be taught to swim , early,” he said. “They must also be j impressed with the fact that cloth ing may diminish their ability to swim, and that swimming skill can ' be nullified by such factors as a blow on the head, stomach cramp, and ev en extremely cold water. “In certain environments, learning to swim must take into considera tion such factors as tides and cur- I! rents, surf, undertow, whirlpools, rocks and coral. It also must feature I handling of rafts, canoes, logs, skis. ! paddle and surf boards and small I boats.” Dr. Domm made the following sug- 1 gestions for the protection of small children: 1. Parents should fence their swim- ming pools and supervise children in 1 wading pools. i 2. Lily ponds and fish pools should be filled in with dirt or covered with heavy wire mesh. 3. Parents should fence yards to I prevent children front straying to un- I fenced pools of neighbors or to irri- I gation ditches, abandoned wells, cis- I terns and other death traps. 4- Baby should never be left alone I in the bath; not een for just a mom- II ent.
