OSC experiment station agronomist Ronald Landing reports that dinitro- ( amine "pre-emergence” spray will kill broadleaf weeds and some grasses without reducing yields—if properly applied. Direct contact of the chem- I ical with the weeds, along with soil residue action, gives control for three or four weeks following treatment. | Length of control depends upon soil [ moisture and temperature. landing recommends spraying bran fields about two days before the j beans break through the soil. Sweet corn spraying can be delayed until the ; plants begin to emerge. The weed j killer has been tested only with those two crops and Laning cautions again- i st trying it for other vegetables.! Dinitro-amine is sold under several trade names as a liquid containing three pounds of active ingredient per gallon. I Three pounds of active ingredient 1 per acre of sandy soil, and up to six I pounds for heavy soil, should be mixed with enough water to get good cover-1 age—usually 40 to 60 gallons per I acre. If the spray is applied only | over the plant row, the amount can j be reduced accordingly. Spraying a smooth seedbed that is | slightly moist on the surface will I insure a better weed kill. Clods pre- i vent the chemical from coming in con tact with all the soil surface, and a I moist surface is needed for residual! action of the spray. When only the plant rows are | •prayed It is important in cultivating for weed control between the rows! not tn throw loose soil into the row. This may carry weed seed into the plant row.
