Merry Christmas Ixxal Men Attend Meeting Gates W omans Club Holds Of U. S. Chamber of Christmas Party Thursday Commerce in Salem Friday GATES—One of the jolliest events May the light of a Happy Sec: D. B. Hill and Bob Hill of the Mill City State bank were among those from the canyon area who attended a “meet your congressman” program Friday night at the Hotel Marion, in Salem, sponsored by the U. S. Chamb er of Commeice and local Chambers. The congressman was questioned by 11 men from nine different cities on 11 national issues and then the meeting was thiown open to questions from anybody. The 11 issues and the men who framed the questions on them w’ere: Taxes, Lee Ohmart, Salem: govern ment spending, Clyde Williamson, Al bany; agriculture, Lyman Seely, Woodburn; Taft-Hartley act, Asa lx'welling, Salem; social security. Dick Hoyt, Corvallis; postal rates, Del Moore, Astoria; government func tions, R. R. Mains, McMinnville; treaty law, Charles A. December at the Santiam Memorial hospital at Stayton. Mrs. Shepherd, with her family had been residents of Gates for many years. Mrs. Shepherd was , born in Marion, Oregon October 30, 1886. She married Adam Shepherd I April 15, 1904. He preceded her in death in 1951. Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. Mabie Hampton, Florence, Oregon; three sons, William, of Mill City; Paul, Tensed, Idaho and Harold, of Tillamook; a sister, Julia Johnson, | Troy, Idaho and four grandchildren. Her only brother died in Alturas, Cal., two days before his sister, December 10. Funeral services were held at the Weddle Funeral home, Tuesday, Ile- i cember 15, the Rev. Harold Lyman, officiating. Burial was in the Lone Oak cemetery. Stayton. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hunter left Tuesday night, about midnight for Los Angeles to spend the holidays with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mis. Tracy Hunter, and son, Ter ry. Tracy is superintendent of a ma chine shop in L. A. that manufactures small airplane parts. When asked why they left at midnight, Frank stated they would hit the mountain passes in the morning about the time the snow plows opened the highway. t S 61 All the joys of the of the holiday season here was the annual Christmas party of the Gates Womans club, Thursday evening, De cember 17, held in the recreation rooms of the Gates high school. Mrs. Orville Nygaard, Mrs. T. E. White, Mrs. Geoige Clise and Mrs. John Watson were hostesses for the even ing. In the absence of both the regu lar president and vice-president, Mrs. W. R. Hutcheson presided at a short business session. A letter to the club from the “Garden of Bethlehem Orphanage” in Tokyo was read. The letter was in acknowledgement of the receipt of the eight boxes of clothing sent to the orphanage by the club recently. A message from Mrs. Marion Weather- ford, president of the Oregon State Federation of Womens’ clubs was also read. Mrs. Philip Hess and Mrs. Phillip Cann each held the lucky number (13) in two drawings that were held and each received a pair of pillow cases. Following adjournment Mrs. Dale Reynolds told stories of the origin of .-everal favorite Christ mas carols, which were sung by the group with Mrs. Don Miley at the piano and Mrs. Waiter Brisbin leading. Mrs. Robert Levon played the part of Santa, distributing gifts to each member, while Mrs. Reynolds passed out packages brought by “secret pals.” Dainty refreshments were served by the hostesses, at tables decoiated with holly and Christmas candles, to three special guests, Mrs. Phillip Cann, Mrs. Robert Rose and Mis. H. L. Morton, who were welcomed into the club as new members and Mrs. W. R. Hutche son. Mrs. Phillip Hess, Mrs. Richard Parker, Mrs. Walter Brisbin, Mrs. Burrel Cole, Mrs. W. S. A. girls, worked on the decortions for the Christmas Prom, which was given Wednesday night. Tuesday Bob Veness came to the school and took some pictures for the school annual.
