Secretary of State Earl T. Newbry reported Friday. If the upswing continues, Newbry said there is danger that the over all reduction noted thus far for the year may be wiped out. Careless driving to date has claimed 271 lives as compared with 319 ’reported for the coi responding period last year. In an attempt to ward off any further increases, Oregon traffic safety officials plan to place special | emphasis on reducing pedestrian deaths during the remainder of the year. If successful. this could make a marked difference in the final traf fic toll.
