Auditor ;
ing August, Secretary of State E. Tax Consultant
T. Newby reported this week.
The death rate based on the number
of persons killed in traffic smash-
ups compared with miles driven, is PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT;
the lowest so far this year and the
Bookkeeping, Accounting and
lowest ever recorded for the month.

Newby said figures compiled in
his office indicate that fewer miles

stat 's streets and highways. The
August mileage totalled 651,214,188.
Traffic deaths at the end of Aug
ust stood at 145, a marked decrease
over the corresponding period last
year when 281 had met deaths in mis
haps at the end of eight months.
While Newby called these figures
encouraging, he added that last year
Oregon had won a slight reduction
in deaths until winter arrived.
Forty-four deaths in October, 51 in
November and 41 in December wip
ed out the gain and showed the final
count of 460, the second highest toll
ever recorded in the state. The same
thing could happen this year Newby
warned.
