Group Identifies Old
Photographic Plates
About a dozen people gathered at
the home of Mrs. J. R. Geddes in this
city Monday afternoon.
Mrs. Mathilda Sigmund Jones was
among those present. Over sixty years
ago a brother of Mrs. Jones’, Andy
Sigmund, took a great number of
photographs in the vicinity of Mill
City, Gates, Mehama and Stayton.
These photographic plates, being of
the old time glass type variety, had
never been developed. These are now
the property of the Archives division
of the state of Oregon.
These plates have been loaned to
Mrs. Jones by the State Historical
office and she is attempting to
identify places and people on them.
With this in mind, she has had various
gatherings, of which this was the
twenty-seventh. To date over 90 per
cent of the pictures have been identi­
fied.
Mrs. Geddes, who is 98 years old
and Mill City’s oldest citizen, was
able to name people and places on
many of these photographs, most of
them taken around 1887 when this
vicinity looked a great deal differ­
ent than at the present time.

“road” and where the trail begins.

the deep snow.

Forest Service To Maintain
400 Miles Of Trails In
Detroit Area This Summer
DETROIT—In the Detroit District
of the U. S. Forest Service, approxi­
mately 400 miles of trails is schedul­
ed for maintenance this summer.
Protection and administration of
national forest lands are a primary
reason for the scheduled work, al-
though the Sky Line trail and I.ake
trails serve an important recreation-
al purpose.
At the present time three trail
cleai ing crews are at work. Later
two crews will be maintained to con­
tinue with the work throughout the
season.
Upkeep of the trails has been de­
layed this year because of deep
snow in the higher altitudes.
“Manning” of all Lookout stations
is behind schedule for the same rea­
son.

Lincoln Henness Honored
On 90th Birthday Sunday
GATES—Lincoln Henness, who was
ninety years old Sunday, July Sth,
was honored by a group of his rela­
tives and friends who gathered at his
home Sunday afternoon to wish him
“many happy returns”. His daughter,
Mrs. James Wiltsey of Salem, was
hostess to her fathers well-wishers.
Mr. Henness was born July 5, 1863,
on his parent’s Donation Land claim
between Stayton and Mehama. When
he was just one year old, his parents
moved to what is now Gates, where
he spent his boyhood.
Mr. Henness was married in Janu­
ary 1884, to Miss Alice Davis, who is
only a few years his junior.
Sharing honors with Mr. Henness
Sunday, were his brother, L. T. Hen­
ness, 98, and Mrs. Ida Geddes, 98, of
Mill City.
