Dam’s authority for power was not
authorized until June, 1948.
Surveys for Detroit Dam were first
made in 1940, but World War II inter­
vened. Relocation of fifteen miles of
North Santiam highway got under ■
way in May 1947, under supervision
of the Bureau of Public Roads and the
Oregon State Highway Commission in [
co-operation with the U. S. Forest '
Service.
Actual excavation for the founda-|
tion of the main dam got under way
in the spring of 1949. Three quarters
of a million yards of material had to
be excavated to get to solid rock for
the foundation.
First concrete was poured in August
1949. The bottom of the dam is 339
feet thick.
The contractor reached
the top pouring concrete in Septem­
ber 1952.
The powerhouse was started in
September 1951, and will not be com­
pleted until September 1953.
Big
Cliff re-regulating dam, several miles
downstream, will-be ready to re-regu-
late the stream flow in Dctober when
the second generator at Detroit Dam
goes into operation. Power from Big
Cliff Dam in the amount of 18,000
kilowatts is due in April 1954,
