Surveys for Detroit Dam were first made in 1940, but World War II inter vened. Relocation of fifteen miles of North Santiam highway got under ■ way in May 1947, under supervision of the Bureau of Public Roads and the Oregon State Highway Commission in [ co-operation with the U. Three quarters of a million yards of material had to be excavated to get to solid rock for the foundation. First concrete was poured in August 1949. The bottom of the dam is 339 feet thick. The contractor reached the top pouring concrete in Septem ber 1952. The powerhouse was started in September 1951, and will not be com pleted until September 1953.
