Union Vacation Bible Mrs. Martie Peterson School Sets Mark Honored by Lucky 12 Attendance in the three depart ments of the Union Vacation Bible School reached the 100 mark this morning (Thursday), with a total en rollment of approximately 125. Neatly twenty adults and young people are on the staff. The program includes Bible stories, memory work, recrea tion, workbook and hand work. The school will continue next week Monday through Friday, with sessions from nine to eleven-thirty each morn ing. A demonstration program will be presented Friday, June 19, at 7:30 o'clock, when parents and friends are invited to observe some of the work accomplished. Vernon Todd To Receive Masters Degree Sunday Vernon S. Todd, superintendent of Mill City schools, will receive his I master of education degree from the I University of Oregon, June 14, in Eugene. The ceremony June 14 marks the 76th sommencement service for the university. More than 1300 under graduate and graduate students will be candidates for degrees at this 1953 commencement. Customer tell us they 17 Receive Eighth Grade Diplomas Detroit-Idanha school, 123-J, grad uated seventeen members of the eighth grade class during a special program and graduation service in the gym, Friday night, May 29. Given their diplomas were Rozalia Bowers, Danny Bowers, Roger Flem ing, Danny Gescher, Bruce Gordon, Judy Haseman, Brad Humphrey, Mike Howland, Donald Jackson, Phyllis Ketchum, Michall Moore, Melodee Palmer, Leonard Snyder, Jim Stahl- man, Lanny Vickers, John Wallace and Donald Watkins. Members of the class dedicated their program to “Our American Heroes, Men and Women Who Have Made Our Country Great.” “America” began the program and was sung by those as sembled. The eighth grade class mem bers led in the pledge to the Flag. Then followed a song by the class, “My Dream of the U.S.A.” and a choral reading, “The American Creed.” Lanny Vickers gave the opening speech. Girls in the graduating class presented another choral reading and the song, "God of Our Fathers”. Roger Fleming entertained with a reading, as did Danny Gescher. Poems were recited by Phyllis Ketchum and John Walace; readings by Donald Jackson, Melodee Palmer and Leonard Snyder. Miss Palmer sang “Flag Without a Stain.” “Sing of America”, a choral reading was given by the eighth grade stu dents. The program ended with everyone singing “God Bless Amer ica.” Bruce Gordon was class historian and read the class history during the graduation program. Billy Cokenour gave the seventh grade class prophecy. Brad Humphrey read the eighth grade class will. Mildred Ray, eighth grade class teacher, presented the diplomas to the graduates. Following the graduation ceremony, the students danced. Members of the eighth grade expressed their appreci ation to their teacher by presenting her with a lovely bouquet of a dozen roses. MILL CITY Mrs. Isaac Roberts is recuperating in her home on River Road following a severe heart attack early this week. 1 Her son, Baird, is keeping informed of | his mother’s condition by daily tele phone communication with Dr. Jack Reid, her attending physician, and expects to arrive home this weekend to be with his mother. Mr. and Mrs. James Swan are in Fortuna, Calif., this week visiting their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. George Gillenwater and family. Their grand-daughter, Carol Jean, will graduate this week from the high school in that city. Last week guests in the home of Mrs. Agness Alen were Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Peterson of Spokane, Wash. Fried Chicken Ranchero 1/2 cup flour 2 cups pared, chopped apples 2 teaspoons salt 1/3 cup chopped onions 1 teaspoon curry powder 1/2 cup grated fresh coconut 1/2 teaspoon paprika or chopped moist, 1/4 teaspoon pepper shredded coconut 1/4 teaspoon ginger 2 cups water 3-pound frying chicken, 1/2 cup milk cut in serving pieces 3 cups cooked rice 1/2 cup Spry (1 cup raw) Put first 6 ingredients in paper bag. . . . Put 2 pieces of chicken at a time in paper bag and shake to coat evenly. . . . Heat Spry in skillet. Place chicken in hot fat and fry until golden-brown on all sides. Cover and cook over low heat until tender (about 30 minutes). . . . Remove chicken to hot platter and make curry sauce as follows: Add apples, onions, and coconut to remaining fat in the skillet. Fry, stirring occasionally until onions become transparent. . . . Add re maining seasoned flour and blend. . . . Stir in water and milk gradually. Cook until thickened, stirring constantly. . . .
