The next week we hear that Chiang has been raiding the commies for more than a year and the 7th Fleet was protecting him. We thought we were on the verge of blockading China, and now we find out that there was no such plan afoot. The President, when campaigning, promised the public his administration would be an “open book”. Now only Congressmen are second-handing the hot dope to newsmen. The whole administration is “clamming up”. The President conducted a news conference so- called. Newsmen are still wondering what happened to the jolly give-and-take they once enjoyed with Mr. Roose­ velt and Mr. Truman. There is a great deal being said about a tax cut for everybody. Those close to the scene say that the big corporate excess profit tax will be the only tax cut. The public is aware of what has happened to their gasoline and electricity bills. The price of groceries and the things we call necessities will soon put. a bigger dent in the billfold because of the administration’s de-control pledge. The press has been pretty nice to the administration the past month.
