I spent Monday in the new City
of Detroit and if you want to make
a beautiful drive don’t fail to drive
jp there soon. The highway has been
given a new coat of black-top in the
past few weeks and the new section
of the road from Detroit to Idanha
is all complete, and is in use now,
making a fast smooth road all the
way to Idanha and soon will be open
from Mehama all the way to Idanha
and on into Bend in eastern Oregon
when the new bridge over the Little
North Fork is completed.
We in the canyon area can be and
are justly proud of this new link in
the highway that makes movement
easy from one city to another. In my
short tenure here I remember the old
road that wound its way along the
bottom of the Santiam canyon from
here to Idanha, in such a fashion that
it was difficult to make the curves
and leave room for meeting the in
evitable traveler along the highway.

The coming of the Detroit dam to
this area has indeed made great
changes for all of us.
Few would
accept the old for the new if it were
possible. The coming of the dam has
brought progress and a new road with
power developments that few had
ever thought possible just a few years
ago. One can drive past the new dam
(it is now getting finishing touches)
and say to himself, “this one we own”,
let us hope that it will always be so.
Detroit now has cheap power fur
nished by Benton-Lincoln Co-op and
new businesses have opened up in
order to make better use of this new
supply of power. Marion Kite has
opened up a new electric contracting
and supply store to service the com
munity and is putting in lines of ap
pliances of all kinds and sizes for
every seed.
