Retroactive Pay Due CIO Woodworkers Loggers and sawmill workers who terminated employment with employ ers who have contracts with the In ternational Woodworkers of America, CIO, during the recent strike in the northwest, were urged today to apply immediately to their former employers for retroactive pay due as a the strike settlement. The notice came from A. F. Har- tung, IWA president, who said the men may have only a few days yet to make application, The retroactiv- ity tsems from the new contract which grants a wage boost of 7P< c an hour plus differential pay and other bene- ftis as of April 1. Men who worked from that tune until the strike was railed will have pay coming to them if their operations were covered l.y the IWA northwest regional negotiat ing committee settlement, Hartung said, regardless of where they are working now, or what union affiliation they may have. Deadline of 30 days for applica tion is based on the date each indi vidual company was notified by the wage stabilization board that its con tract with the union as approved, That deadline is nearly at hand in some cases. R.. Niagara Falls, N. Y. ANSWER. While you may be right about this being surface water, it is obvious, also that your foundation is undermined. Water must pass under the footing to come up inside. Therefore, unless drain tiles are located out side the tooting, there is always the danger your foundation can be completely under mined and collapse. Put your drainage tiles outside-and below the footing. QUESTION: The interior of my house is finished with fiber board panels. Every joint has cracked its full length. The joints seem to have been made with a tape and putty or paste. This may have cracked due to swelling and shrinkage due to moisture changes. Is there a flexible inatetial 2 can use for these cracks? -D. C. J., Racine, Wise. ANSWER: More likely the cracked joints result from shrinkage in structural timbers of your home. Taped joints are standard, and we’d suggest replacement with the same ma terial. Green timber continue« to shrink for seme years, with resulting cracks in all wall finish, but it seems probable you’ve passed the worst stage. Flexible materials make poor bases for paint, paper. Never a. Dull Moment “At the Bottom of the Hill" MILL CITY TAVERN QUESTION: I’m looking for something to prevent rust on gutters and downspouts. Would red lead do this? -W. B., Seattle. Wash. ANSWER: Yes. Red lead is a fine rust pre ventative on all metal. It does require a coat of paint after it has dried, unless you want to live with its color. In addition there are paint-on galvanising compounds, black metal paints, rust-sealing compounds with rubber and asphalt bases.
