Below ( Bl’s ''mud bucket” held the center of int -rest at Detroit Dam, August 5, 1950. Jim Myers, CBI powder foreman, tooted a whistle and into its flying trapeze act went Detroit Dam’s first hucketfull of “mud" (concrete) that sun-bathed day. The white arrow in above photo marks the spot where that first eight cubic yards of "mud" finally was placed. Top picture is an pfficial Corps of Engineers’ air photo of “Operation Concrete" which records the mid-way point on the concrete pouring on Detroit Dam. (Photos courtesy Capital Journal) Concrete forms and walkway» cling to the facade of Detroit Dam above. This was the view North Santiam Canyon tourists saw August 1951. The sleek lines of Detroit Dam are unveiled in the lower photo taken the first week of June 1952. Completion of Detroit Dam is scheduled for June 1953. Construction work on the dam started March 1919. Main concrete pouring operations yet remaining are the roadway atop the dam and filling the river diversion tunnel sealed off Tuesday morning.
