NEWSPAPER Editorial Comment NATIONAL PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION mm ‘THE PAPER THAT HAS NO ENEMIES HAS NO FRIENDS.” George Putnam First Aid Corps Because of a recent accident within the city limits of Mill City it^was painfully called to the attention of many that this canyon is “short on those who can administer aid and comfort to the wounded and seriously ill “on the scene". The upper North Santiam Canyon area now has but one active doctor, I)r. Jack Heid of Mill City. However, a new doctor is expected here in the near future. It need not be pointed out that this vast area involves hundreds of loggers and construction workers plus their respective families. The Canyon area for this reason needs a corps of “first aiders" who can apply their skill in emergencies and thereby save precious lives and prevent needless pain and suffering. Even though the Canyon gets one more doctor the shortage of available “on the scene" first aiders still will exist. It has been suggested by some that the many fine trained nurses who live in this community be banded together into a special volunteer group. Members of this group, under the plan proposed, would alternate in placing themselves “on call" in the event of an ambulance call or some such emergency. Plus putting themselves on an active basis for ambulance calls and the like, this nurse corps in regular classes could teach the art of first aid to many local citizens. The population of the Canyon shifts continuously and increases rapidly. It is vital that always there be maintained a trained and active corps of those who can quickly care for accident victims and those stricken suddenly. The best insurance in the world does not help the injured person who collapses into shock soon after being injured, but a first aider on the spot can help. We need the help of these fine nurses in our community. We hope their homes will not be too disrupted by our demands. Swimmin’ Hole One thing is clear 'round these here parts—a public swimmin’ hole is needed! Bob Hill sees this need, and not being satisfied with just seeing it, has lieen patiently doing something about it. Bob has inspected public swimming pools in neighboring cities. He has the ball rolling on design and location. Bob has put the public swim-bug into the ear of many and has proved that he is receptive to new ideas about the whole matter as well. Recognizing the recreation that a public swimming pool would afford and getting that pool are two very different things. The main hurdle is the thorough planning of this project. Once everything is carefully investi gated. decisions can be reached and the way ahead mapped. (ietting a lighted athletic field was not such a great strain on this community. Citizens are finding that this field is quite an asset after all. Public interest in the activities of Allen Field is just in its infancy. It will be the same story with a public swimming pool—rest assured. Since it is generally agreed that we are entitled to a nice public pool and have plenty of space for one, now is the time for working out the ways and means. It can be done.. How about it?
