"SMALL BUSINESS”
By C. WILSON HARDER
This week before Christmas a
new cynicism prevails in Wash
ington.
»
For many a homemaker the kitch
en serves as much more than the
room in which she prepares meals
and does the clean-up job after
wards. Frequently it serves as her
“office.” Here she keeps the fam
ily's budget, writes checks to cover
the household bills, copies and files
recipes that look enticing—and helps
the children with their homework.
Sometimes the modem kitchen is
criticized because it doesn’t allow
for such “extra curricular” chores.
But there’s no reason why modern
steel kitchen equipment can't be ar
ranged to provide the comfortable
and efficient facilities for this part
of the homemaker's work.
Take a look at the arrangement
illustrated below and suggested by
the Youngstown Kitchens Planning
Service.

GATES
By MRS ALBERT MILLSAP
Among those from Gates attend
ing the Etzel-Devine nuptials in Sub
limity, Saturday morning, were Mr.
and Mrs. Hollis Turnidge, Mrs. Floyd
Völkel. Mrs. Martha Bowes, Mrs.
Blanch Dean, Mrs. Harry Keiser, Mrs.
William Pennick, Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Kelle, Mrs. N L. Pennick, Mrs. Henry
Eccleston, Mrs. Frank Norvock, Mr.
and Mrs. Clyde Oliver and daughter
Jean, Mrs. William Oliver, Mrs. Wil
liam Shepherd. Mrs. Burrel Cole and
son Marlin.
Over Sunday guests at the home
of Mrs. Wilma Carey, were her son
and family, Mr. and Mrs, Eugene
Carey and daughter, of Portland.
Mrs. Gilbert Weathers was hostess
at her home for a Stanley party last
Thursday afternoon.
Following the
demonstration
refreshments
were
served to Mrs. George Stafford, Mrs.
Tilman Rains, Mrs. Marvin Stafford,
Mrs. Clarence Ball, Mrs. Charles Geib-
ler, Mrs. William Grimes, Mrs. Joe
Schaffer, Mrs. June Weathers, Mrs.
Bertha Tainter and the hostess Mrs.
Weathers.
Louise Haun, 12, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Cecil Haun was taken to
Portland the last of the week where
she will be hospitalized at Doern-
becker hospital for some time. The
child has been ill since October with
rheumatic fever and is bedfast. Louise
has to remain very still and her only
pastime is reading. She looks for
ward eagerly for the mailman each
day and devours animal stories. She
would appreciate letters or books
from her friends.
Jimmy Carey, son of Mrs. Velma
Carey was painfully injured while
playing basket ball on the high school
team, in the game between Gates and
Jefferson last week. He sustained
a badly bruised chest, when he colli
ded with a member of the opposing
team, a nasty kick on his shin and a
sprained ankle when some one stepped
on him. He was taken to a doctor
following the game, who found only
bruises, no broken bones.
Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Joaquin the past week were Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Cooper, Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Cooper, all from Ashland and
and Mrs. George Sorter of Lakeview,
who were all called here by the serious
illness of their father, Elmer Cooper.
Mrs. Lula Collins spent two days
this week in Lyons at the home of
her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. C. Rosheim.
Ernest Keith Kadine, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Ed. Kadine was inducted in
the service January 16. He was sent
to Fort Lewis where he was to be for
five days before being sent to a camp
to receive his basic training.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kaylor of
Mollala were recent guests at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Burrel Cole.

This forms an ideal kitchen desk,
