June 8, 1950 •THE MIEI. CITY ENTERPRISE SPCKTS PAGE CBI Engineers 'Edges’ Wrestling Tonight at Operations Nine 25-6 Mill City Theatre Last Thursday evening at Camp Mongold the CBI Engineers won the opening Detroit Dam Softball league game by edging the Operations soft- ballers. Neither team could hit for the first two innings, but the CBI boys got their slugging eyes back in the third and scored six runs. From then on it was their game. Roberts was the starting pitcher for CBI and stymied the opposition for the first three innings. Only one run crossed the plate. Yarnell took over in the fourth and did a fine job for the rest of the game. Both pitched to “Solid Rock"Slm- beni, the man who keeps the enemy runners glued to the bases. It has to be a really wild pitch before a ball gets by Pete Simbenl, the best catcher in the league. Coffey, center field for Operations, suffered a terrific collision with left fielder Pinkstat when they both tore after a fly ball. He was temporarily out of commission but managed to walk off the field under his own power. Pinkstat was unhurt. The CBI Engineers play the Detroit team, Thursday, June 8, at Mongold, then they travel to their home field for a game with the REOs on Monday evening, June 12, at 5:45 p.m. This will be their first league game on the Mill City diamond and promises to be a good one. As to whether their make-up is straight or not will make no point of difference to June Kelley and Thelma Jackson as they meet tonight in a wrestling match at the Mill City theatre. Feminine Umpire Charms Softball Mrs. Bill (Marie) Stover umpired a softball game Monday evening on the Mill City high school field. Al though Marie attracted more atten tion than the ball game, male or fe male, umpires are all alike to the crowd. She suffered as much abuse as any of the umpires in the major leagues. She did a fine job at um piring though, and nobody could make any real beefs. The softball game, incidently, was between the CBI Engineers and the Warehouse Gang. The Engineers had a big inning in the third, scoring seven runs, and then going on to win by a score of 12 to 4. Both teams played well and it was an in teresting game to watch. The lineups were as follows: CBI Engineers: THELMA JACKSON her wrestling prowess and her Omaha ability as she meets Thelma Jackson only 9 pounds her junior in the fea ture wrestling card. At the last wrestling card in Mill City the young Peterson boys won the hearts and the coins of the sports enthusiasts as they punched it out in an exhibition boxing match. "No nation is on its way to bank ruptcy which has more than $100,- 000,000,000 of savings, which it has accumulated since the dark days of the late 1920’s and early 1930's . . . No. nation is on its way to bank ruptcy into whose hands the leader ship of the world has been thrust, and which is seeking and is able to carry the torch ... to make our own democracy and our own institutions safe, and prevent our having to be come an armed camp to protect our selves against the godless and ruth less ideology which seeks to engulf the world. “These are the things that make Democrats proud." Bud-grafting a young rubber tree in Southeast Asia to produce a higher yield. Modern civilization has been nourished on the milk of the rub ber tree. From baby nipples to giant truck tires, from girdles to garden hose, life today depends on rubber. Over 90% of all the rubber that is grown comes from Southeast Asia where millions of people make their living by planting, cultivating and tapping tie bil lions of acres of rubber trees. Not satisfied with Nature's prod uct, researchers are constantly at work to improve it. At the Rubber Research Institute of Malaya, high- yielding strains are developed and bud-grafted to rubber trees, insecticides and fungicides are developed to keep trees healthy, and the quality of the rubber it self is continually tested in lab oratories. Today natural rubber is used in thousands of products that serve mankind, and many new uses are being discovered every year.
