Book Shelf to
Detroit High School
An entirely new method of teaching
high school studenrts facts about the
ragion's greatest industry — lumber
and forest products has been intro
duced to schools of this county. A
12-volume Lumber Book Shelf, con
taining the finest books published on
lumber, logging, forestry and natural
history, has been presented recently
to school libraries by local forest
products firms.
This new educational technique has
already attracted national interest.
More than 275 Oregon and Washing
ton high schools, libraries and col
leges have received the Lumber Book
Shelves, gifts of nearby firms. Na
tional magazines have featured the
plan for preserving a complete pack-

age of background information on
a single industry.
The Lumber Book Shelf haa been
presented to Detroit high school by
l Idanha Lumber Co., Idanha Shingle
Co.. Idanha Veneer Co., Pamelia Lum-
. ber Co., and Harvey Lumber Co.
The books have been carefully se
lected by a committee of leading
northwest educators and provide
local students with a wide range of
authentic knowledge of the lumber
and forest products industry. These
books will be particularly helpful to
students who annually participate in
statewide essay and oratorical con
tests as well as for general reference
I and study.
The Lumber Book Shelf is part of
the West Coast Lumbermen’s associ
ation educational program developed
in co-operation with its member mills
and includes specialized booklets on
this region in addition to the large
| books.
These books will remain a perman
ent part of the school*libraries, local
lumbermen indicated.
"It is our
hope," they said, "that students will
learn many facts about this industry
from these well-selected volumes.
As new and up-to-date books are pub
lished, we plan on adding to the shelf
to keep it abreast of new develop
ments ”
