10—THE MILL CITY ENTERPRISE Speed Chief Factor In Traffic Deaths Accidents outside the limits of cities and towns continued to exact Ore gon’s heaviest traffic death toll last year, the secretary of state's traffic safety division reported today Complete figures for 1949 show three out of four fatal smash-ups took place outside of incorporated areas, the division said. Accident atudies covering the past several years reveal approximately the same high proportion of lethal mishaps. Safety officials said higher rates Of speed on open highways was the factor most responsible, pointing out that an accident at relatively slow City speeds is not so likely to cause injury or death. A similar accident at even normal highway speed sharply decreases the chances of es- caping death. The record holds a lesson for all motorists to keep in mind during the coming spring and summer travel season, the division stressed. Inter- city traffic is expected to remain at peak levels, demanding heads-up driv ing when city limits signs are left behind.
