I’m going to start off today by writing about a “four-bit" word:
“Initiative." Actually, this one word is what made this country of
ours what it is today. All our industrial giants had to have more of
it than the rest of us to get where they are.
In other words, they are “leaders" instead of “followera." They
turned a “four-bit” word into a “million dollar” word.
But I wonder if our present day modern Hucksters and Hi power
ed Salesmen haven't dimmed a lot of this in moat of us. Don’t
get me wrong. 1 don’t have anv thing against salesmen. In fact, I
enjoy watching them work. But sometimes their line goes something
like thia: Mrs. John Q., the company I represent is the oldest and
makes more different items in their field than any other, so naturally
there is no use looking any farther. Just sign on the dotted line and
you’ll get the best automatically. —This is a condensed version, of
course.
1 wonder how far this lute of reasoning would get with some of
our industrial leaders? As an illuslration: I was talking the other
day to one of the key men for the large contractor on the Dam, and
was showing sonic pictures of the Admiral line, when he remarked
that the largest television set Admiral makes is what “the Boss" has
in his private offices in Willow Run.
This didn't surprise me, because it is typical of the man. He
wanted the BEST RESULTS in a television picture. In other words,
when a salesman tells me a story like that, I recall on “old saw’’
that goes something like this: “Jack of all trade, complete master
of none.”
So in chosing our lines, we purposely chose "specialists" in each
line. For example: Deepfreeze only makes a home freezer. And has
several exclusive features. We chose Admiral because they concen
trate only on three items (radio television, Refrigeration, Ranges)
with several \D\ W ED exclusive features oil each. We have added
Stromberg-Carlson radios because they are specialists in their field
of communication. We also have Wilcox-Gay, home recorder special
ists. Simplex ininers—to round out our growing family of specialists
in their fields.
In other words, maybe we are old-fashioned, but we still believe
in that old "saw.”
Anyway, drop around. We would like to tell you about our lines
and let you make a careful comparison. We can’t all turn the word
"Initiative" into a million dollars, but we can make it pay off in our
everyday living.
