Here is a pattern of incalculable
value for any county to follow. Some
county fairgrounds in the Douglas
fir regions have adjacent woodlands
like the 3-acre and 7-acre tracts at
Deer Island. In any fair, a model of
a demonstration farm - forest tract
can be made a feature.
By means of a model, the basic
facts of ‘‘More Tiees for Washington
and Oregon” can be shown. An ac
tual demonstration tract is best, of
course. But any kind of forest exhi
bit always draws the crowds.
How Thinning Pays.
The Columbia County tract has 16
bosses, members of the county farm
forestry committee. Their problem
in the first annual harvest, 1949, was
to plan the cutting rate.
The foresters agieed that the 10
acres were too jampacked with trees
for good growth. They saw an aver
age of 100 cords per acre in the ex
isting trees. Then they decided on a
yearly cut of ten cords per acre, or a
total of 50 cords per acre for five
years.
The timber cut in 1949 was from
dense patches; from deformed, bro
ken and otherwise damaged trees,

COUNTY FAIR FOREST
The Columbia County fairgrounds
at Deer Island, Ore., include 10 acres
of woodland which have been set as
ide as a demonstration area. The pur
pose is to make a living picture for
the samll timber owner to show how
he can manage his woodland to earn
satisfying wages and at the same
time take out wood each year in ways
and amounts to maintain the stand.
The 10 acres are a year-round ex
hibit for anybody who cares to turn

Many trees that were harvested
could not have grown much more
wood. Others left more room for
growth of the remaining trees.
After five year» the improvement
of the woodland in terms of thinning
should be through i t s first phase.
Then the plan is to cut no more wood
than the trees are growing year by
year. This plan, as it looks now, will
run for 20 years after this first five-
year period.

this reason the tendency has been to
let it go, the trees taikng care of
themselves, the logging, when it is
done, being jobbed out for a lump
sum to a logging contractor without
cutting restrictions.
One look by any small timber own
er at the Columbia County demon
stration tract will show that careful
woodland management pays. The rea
sons for the selections that were
made for cutting stand out. for the
most part, from stumps Snd remain

the course of skidding, the canopy
and the wind protection left in stands
—these and many other features are
worth studying.

The cut amounted to 90 cords. It
brought in income of $65.11 per acre.
In wages, this amounted to $2.38 per
hour. Pulp and paper mills supplied
the main market. Pourteen alders
