The Pacific Northwest has been growing foster than new generating plants can be built Power demands now equal the full capacity of all plants in the Northwest Power Pool, and will exceed such capacity during the coming winter season unless everyone cooperates to sove electricity over the daily peak hours of use. Q What aro the "peak" hour» of power use? A. At this season, the greatest demand for power occurs between 11 a. m. and noon and between 4:30 p. m. and 6:30 p m. Q How can I as a housewife help save power during peak periods? A. By avoiding the use of electric heaters at any time, by planning meals which require minimum use of ronge elements and oven during peak hours; by doing all washing and ironing at hours other than peak hours, and by turning off all lights not actually needed during the peak hours Q How can business firms help during the criticol period? A. By turning off unessential lights during the peak hours, by plonning use of motor driven equipment during off-peak hours wherever possible ;by limiting or ehmf ating display and sign I ghting during peak hours; and by making it a daily haf o watch for any other poss ble savings o electricity during peak hours. Industrial plants throughout the Pacific Northwest are cooperating in many ways to help with this regional problem. Some are shifting their working hours. Others are rescheduling their use of power driven ma chinery. Q Is the Conservation program throughout the Northwest? A. Yes Every power system in the region is following the same general program be cause the problem is the same everywhere, but each individual user of electricity knows best how he can do his part in the program Your saving may be in one way, your neighbor's in another. If everyone does his part in this voluntary program, the neces sary result can be accomplished without serious inconvenience to any one. Other wise, an overload will pile up and then only one thing can happen—a general break down of a vital public service! Q How important is it for me to do my part In the conservation program? A. Your own saving may appear small to you but when added to that of each of the one million users of electricity in this region will insure success of the program The person who turns off an unneeded 100 watt lamp bulb during the peak hours is paying just as necessary a part in the conservation pro gram as the industrial plant which arranges to run a 1,000 horsepower motor at some other time than during the peak hours. uniform I' I To Keep Jobs Going .
