Letter From Dr. Watts.
The liquor traffic is founded
in superstition.
There is nothing modern
othing intelligent,
customs of the land
were born way back in the
misty past, and is hoary headed
with ignorance and superstition,
and moss-backed with age.
They are remnants of the leg
ends of the past. ‘
They have come to us, not
through the educated minds of
.therace, but perpetuated in the
Tlkswiu'ss of the lusts and passions
m humanity.
It comes to us from the pagan
worship of devil Gods.
Men drink the nasty, dirty,
bitter swill called beer; gulps it
down, his manhood is soon
gone; gets drunk and cries out,
“Great is Gambrinus, the son of
beer.”
Saloons are temples of Bac
chus and Gambrinus, two of the
most beastly heathen gods.
Moro money is paid to their
devotion than for schools and
churches.
Alcohol is a poisonous destruc-
iVe of health and even life itself.
Nothing can live in it; kills veg
etable and animal life.
Its nature produces disease of
whioh a tierce demand for itself
is one of its evils and of human
cupidity which is willing to make
money by ministering to this
depraved.jannatural appetite.
An inlnunan and God defying
greed for money to carry on war
first devised * the
jf
. scheme in Enii-
land of making revenue out of
the.sale of liquor and hence fix
ed the cursed license system of
an evil.
Under this license system for
revenue the most monstrous
abuses and crimes have resulted,
destructive of everything valua
ble to humanity, embarassing
to capital, deranging labor, cor
rupting politiyp, jeopardizing to
property and life itself. Increas
ing insanity, idiocy, misery,
poverty and crime.
Sapping the very foundations
of our great republic until its
friends are already boasting that
their gods are greater than our
God or fhï people.
“That you prohibit the*liquor
traffic.
We will soon see which is the
greatest, the God of Israel or the
god of Bacchus.
We have tried many ways to
regulate the monster, but it fails
to regulate.
Richelieu, the French cardi
nal, whose niece was pursued by
bold and slanderous enemies,
plucked from his own breast a
cross, and drawing the circle of
the church of Rome around her,
hurled in the faces of her ene
mies the defiance
“Look and see where she stands,
around her form 1 draw the
« awful circle of our kingly
church. Step across its hal
<< lowed lines if you dare.
And
on thy head, yes though it
wear a crown I’ll hurl the
curse of Rome.” They did not
cross it.
Let us as parents, Christians,
patriots, lovers of humanity, let’s
draw the death line around our
homes and children, our loved
ones and the goddess of liberty,
on the 8th of next November, in
Oregon, by using our sovereignty
as electors, and pass the prohi
bition constitutional amendment
by an overwhelming majority.
What say you.
Everything else has failed you
can appeal to. Let’ us do our
best.
Kansas, Iowa, Maine and
Rhode Island have placed pro
hibition in their state constitu
tions.
Tennessee, Alabama and Ore
gon vote on it this year. West
Virginia has already promised
to vote on it next year. About
twenty states have started in this
same direction. When three-
fourths of the states place pro
hibition in their state constitu
tions then they will have the
power to put prohibition in the
U. S. constitution. Then the
rum nower will be paralyzed.
May tno-day sdbn come.
