In Memoriam.
Over the bridge, across the river,
The footsteps come and go ;
Their ceaseless tread goes on forever,
While the waters ebb and flow.
Across the beautiful bridge of life
We all must sometime go;
To join that band of spirits bright
While the waters ebb afid flow.
As we stood upon the side
walk yesterday afternoon and
watched the throng of sympa
thizing friends who had gather
ed from far and near to pay their
last respects to Uncle John G.
Baker, we instinctively recalled
our last social visit at his house.
How often, when an hour of si
lent thought falls upon the soul,
remembrance winds the silken
tendrils of the heart and lets a
strain of tender memories flow
back upon the past. In such
moments how sweetly sad we
flwell upon the last words of
some dear one whom we are des
tined to meet no more upon
earth. Our last visit with him
at his home was in the evening
hour ; a holy hush seemed hov
ering like a spirit of light and
love around the scene, softly fell
the twilight dew, and sweetly
came the breath of blooming
flowers, as we sat with the old
pioneer and his amiable wife,
and talked of the days that tried
men’s souls in Oregon. tVe
would not lift the veil of sancti
fied domestic life nor peer with
in the portals of that home now
shrouded in sorrow; but it was
the home of joy, of confidence
and affection, as beautiful and
pure as earth possessed. To the
Father of all we commend this
deeply stricken household. Lov
ing words and tender acts of
human sympathy are too feeble
to roach the deep and painful
grief caused by the removal of
one so loved, so honored in the
home which he cherished with
such tender affection. To sum
up the character of our friend
would be to say that in him wo
find the wise counsellor and ad
vocate, the high minded, intelli
gent, fearless, independent, in
corruptible and patriotic citizen.
In the immediate family connec
tion we behold the loving wife,
