OartwttU. of a Btulaeea Which Seeks tv Plea-« Hable«. There 1» much that may be seen by • visit to a doll factory that would have for many people the forc e of a revela tion. Few probably realize what a num ber of proc-e.-sea are necessary before even the tiniest of dolls is ready for the nursery. There is certainly a bewilder ing number of suitable substunces. Be- •idc: the various kinda of wax, from the beat Engliah to the common foreign sorts, there are spermaceti and various kinds of compositions; india rubber, gutta percha, wood and rags, not to mention various judicious combinations of these and other materials. But the beat dolls are made only of the beat En- iliah wax. Then come the composition oils, which are much more durable and some of which have their faces pro tected by a Chin piece of muslin, and so on through the whole list It is. how ever, the waxen dolls that appeal most powerfully to the effections and the ad miration of the girls of England. The construction ' of the molds in which these are now made involve» some knowledge of modeling. The molds are made of plaster of paris, the ▼»rioua sections being deftly joined to gether with such nicety as to legve hut few marks of the joints. Into this the melted wax is poured while still very hot, and a thilD film immediately ad heres to the sides of the mold, which is quickly inverted, In order that the molt- •• wax in the center may flovy out. But although thia rough mask is fairly com plete in point of outline much remains to be done before it can be regarded as poeeeMing those charms which are com- ■aouiy believed to be a doll's rightful in heritance. The roughnesses have to be smoothed down, a distinctive character has to be given to the mouth and nose, the eyebrows have to be delicately pen ciled in; and we may well cease to won der that Shakspeare s lover should have writteb an ode "to bis mistress’ eye brow,” when we see the wouderful ef- feot produced on a doll's face by various arrangement» of brow and lash. Then the eyes, which are like beautiful sheila although they oan be bought by the I roes of auy color and size, have to be zed in, which is done by plastering them at the back with a little soft wax. The method of fastening the hair so as to give it a natural appearance is one of the best teats of the case with which a doll has been made In the best dolls almost every strand is attached sepa rately to the wax itself, while in the cheaper kinda a wig is roughly stuck on the uoil's head. This is a very import ant point, which doll-worshifiers will properly appreciate, for is uot the most delightful part of the doll's daily toilet the brushing and oombiug of the hairP Then there «re many qualities of hair, from the best mohair to common flax. We have said little about tne tinting of li|»s and checks, processes which in volve a nice appreciation of effect. So far doll fanciers teem to believers iu the ruddy hue of health, for we have never yet seen an "interesting” doll with checks of the color of under-done pastry. But it would be rush to specu late upon the future, fur the new science of laalc may yet influence even the nursery and the doll trade. — C' oms U’ s *'amiq .Vagnsiue. mi ville M’MINNVILLE LIVERY FEED AND SALE STABLES PIONEER BOOT AND SHOE STORE Is the best place to get your goods for the Holidays.
