Loughary, of Lafayette, was in the city yesterday' and made a social visit. Friends of Mrs. C. VV. Talmage will be gratified to learn that she is much improved to-day. C. A. Wallace of this city has as fine stock now as any man in Oregon. Cattle and horsos. The Brown Bear, the finest five cent cigar in the market, at J. Harv. Hen- derspn’s city grocery store. He deals in solid facts. Win. Gunning and Miss Alice Green were married ip Marion county by the Rev. T. H. Hepderson on the 12th. They will reside in Bellevue precinct. People of Portland are preparing for the reception of Michael Davitt, the great Irish editor and statesman, soon to arrive.. Win. Fuqua, of Suver, will leave on the 15th (or Kansas city, to be gone two months- He will secure a car load of fine cattle for his Polk county farm. , Prof, Houghton has been busy for the past week or ten days assisting Clyde Apperson in making out ac counts, which means that the time for settlements at Abperson’s is approach ing. , , . ,. Mrs. and, Miss Mitchell, wife and daughter of Senator J. H. Mitchell, expected to sail for home on the 9th, after a sojourn of eighteen months in Paris. Mrs. Senator Dolph and daugh ter expected to sail from London for home on Saturday, also. A postoffice key was stolen from Boyd, Wasco county, on the night of the 6th. The money urawcr was forced open and over $100 in coin taken ; also the postoffice mail key. This key will open any mail bag in the United States except those containing regis- I tered packages, and its loss is a serious matter. One is furnished to each postmaster. The postal authorities will, therefore, spare no pains to ferret out the guilty parties. Mr. Villard was the best man for Oregon that ever took a hand in its laffairs. And it warms up rebellious I blood in us to read this sort of stuff in la webfoQt paper: “Villard has got I some more German suckers with coin at his back, and his health has fully [restored. We hope Vill. will keep laway from Oregon with booming pcliemee. Oregon has adopted the p»ace of a snail, which is slow but ■teady,” and we may add : Always [gets left. any desire to swell his coffers, he has inaugurated and is vigorously prose cuting in person a scheme to establish a competing line of telegraph that shall put within the easy reach of every ope the news of the world. He has just left Portland for San Fran cisco. The Welcome says Senator Mitchell has returned form Washington, after a hard sessions fight in the interest of Oregon. He received quite an ova tion from his friends. Of his work in the senate the following is given by a Portlad paper: He is a member of five committees, railroads, transpor tation routes to the seaboard, claims, mines and mining and library. He is also chairman of a sub-committee on transportation to the sea-bqard, whose duty it is to, investigate and report on the best means of overcoming ob structions to navigation at The Dalles, of the Columbia, whether by canal and locks or ship railroad. His posi tion as member on committees gives him superior advantages to serve the interests of his state and the entire coast.. 8. C. FOBCB. O. ,P. JOHNSON.
