We are having a considerable number
of tardy marks. This should not be.
It is just as easy to get to school by nine
o’clock as two or three minutes later.
All the pupils are striving very hard
since the holidays and some good re
sults are expected.
The 10th grade are practicing on their
recitations.
This is supplementary-
work, preparatory to the drilling on
their orations.
Our debating society did not meet last
Friday as mentioned, but meets today.
The debaters were not ready to cross
swords as they had not yej had time to
make thorough preparations.

With a possibility of
possessing a coal measure, we have no desire to spend our money
in tunnel prospecting, for this reason. A coal measure consists
of a thick strata of limestone, shale and sandstone.
In Nova
Scotia they are 13,000 feet; in South Wales 12,000 feet; Penn
sylvania 4.000 feet; West Virginia 4,500 feet. In addition to
tuese strata of stone there are interstratified thin seams of coal,
and in the richest coal measures known, the proportion of coal to
rock is not more than to 1 to 50. From the nature and origin of
coal it follows that the coal seams of considerable depth are the
most valuable; in fact, the thickest and purest are usually near
the middle of the series. Nova Scotia has 81 coal seams; South
Wales over 100; Lancashire 75, and so on. Now then, instead of
prospecting our coal croppings by tunneling, we propose first,
to ascertain by the use of our drill as to the existence of other
coal seams deeper down. If our drill finds them, then it only
requires the service of a practical coal miner to put us in the
market. We are killing two birds with one stone. We are neg
lecting neither coal nor oil. We promise a full development of
each, and we trust a profitable conclusion of our work. To-day
we have over 300 shareholders, so you see they are coming right
along, but we know of a great many people who should, but have
not. Our drill will arrive before long, and then down goes the
hole, and if we keep right at it, more people must subscribe. We
believe that our efforts will meet with success, but we promise
nothing but a square management and a strict accounting. Every
dollar goes to development; no shareholder need assume a bur
den. Subscribe to any amount you wish, and have an interest
in our work.
