Governor Shaw was born in a log
cabin. There is no barrier in the
road from the cabin to the cabinet.
“Men are killing their wives these
days entirely too often, observes an
exchange. And that is true. By
the way, about how often should
men kill their wives?
Thos. A. Edison is a pretty noted
expert in such matters. He does
not believe in wireless telegraphy,
and laughs at the story that Mar
coni telegraphed across the ocean
without wires.
Professor Loeb’s discovery of the
secret of perpetual life is highly in
teresting, but we need hardly look
for an immediate drop in the cost
of life insurance. Insurance people
are lamentably skeptical.
Self-preservation is the first law
of nature, and that is the immovable
barrier to the free ingress of Chinese
immigrants. In the face of this law
Minister Wu’s golden rule theories
are only so much moonshine.
A little country in South America
named Venezuela owes Germany a
lot of money, and Germany is send
ing war ships over to collect it. We
will confess that a thorough under
standing of the Monroe doctrine is
as hard to get into one’s head as it
must be for a woman to pick out a
crochet pattern, but the Monroe doc
trine seems to be threatened by this
action of Germany, and there is a
talk of war between Germany and
the United States because we must
protectit. Don't get excited; there
will be no war. We have too much
sense to fight with anyone our own
size.
The farmers of Yamhill county do not
seem to be as loyal to their river as it
was supposed they were from the clamor
of years that ended in the construction
of locks at the falls of the Yamhill at
Lafayette. Owing to lack of paying
patronage, the one boat that was put on
the McMinnville river in the fall was
drawn off after two trips.
Another ef
fort will be made to run a boat between
this city and McMinnville, but shippers
have been given to understand that the
only way to keep a boat 011 the route is
to make it pay the owners to run her.
This is a plain proposition, the terms of
which must be met if steamboating is
kept alive on the Yamhill river.—Tues
day Oregonian.
The governor, secretary of state and
state treasurer have fixed the tax levy
for revenue for the year 1902. Under
the new law the 33 counties of the state
each have a separate rate, each county
contributing to the proportion which
their average assessment for the last
five years bears to the average of the
total assessments of all the counties for
the same periixl, which was explained in
a recent issue of this paper. The total
amount of state revenue to be raiseil
this year is $920,000 as compared with
$670,000 last year, or an increase of
$250,000. These figures include $25,000
for the auri< ultural college at Corvallis,
♦93.274 for the University of Oregon at
Eugene, and $116,229.52 for the various
normal schools throughout the state.
Th« total assessment of Yambill county
last year was $4,731,634. Ou this ass
essment we must pay $34,994 50 state
tax. Our state tax last year was $27,-
189.60, the increase this year being
$7,804.90, which is considerable more
than one-fourth above the sum paid to
the state in 1901. By careful figuring it
will be seen that the state is raising
nearly a third more revenue this year
than last. Had it not been for this ex
tra demand the taxes from this county
under the new law would have been con
siderable less than last year, Yamhill
is sixth on the list of heavy state-tax
contributors.
The increase over last
year for the six wealthiest counties is as
follows: Yatnhill, $7,804; Linn,$8,077.91
Lane, $10,259.03; Umatilla, $12,020 50
Marion, $14,269.35; Multnomah, $93,460.-
57. There is an increase over last year
in every county except Malheur, which
enjoys a rebate of $523.26 from the fig
ures of last year. Sherman county has
the smallest increase Over last year, it
being only $7.49.

The poor farmer seems to have to
shoulder everything, whether poli
tics, commerce, religion or gold
bricks. Neither farmers nor ship
pers are responsible for the condi
tion cited above. The “one boat"
that was “drawn off,” was “bought
oft”' and pestered off by competitors.
The Oregonian is not nearly so
smart on Yamhill river ethics as it
assumes to be.
We clamored for
years for the construction of those
locks, and celebrated lustily when
we got them. Perhaps not every
man always patronized the boat
when he should, but the man who
was “drawn off" had no complaint of
the business, and at the time of the
drawing, David Stout, the miller,
had 200 tons of flour awaiting ship
ment. He has estimated that the
total business for a boat from this
city would amount to $1500 a month,
representing 12,000 tons of incoming
and outgoing freight per annum,
