There are just three weeks left Several of the students of the High School expect to go to Portland to see the President There will be a game of base ball be tween the two schools Saturday after noon. Both sides expect to win, and it will be a hot game. The new course of study which is to be a lopted in all high schools is somewhat over the former course. It cuts out Geometry, nnd one or two other studies that do not put a student any higher in the colleges than if he hadn't taken them while attending the high school State School Supt. J. H. Ackerman spoke to the people of this city last night on the subject of Enthusiasm. Tbe young men s literary club was the instru ment in securing him. and they deserve some credit for entertaining him the w . it they did. Mr. Ackerman made a fine talk and told us to be enthusiastic in whatever we undertook. He said all societies needed enthusiasm to make them a success. We desire to thank the 1 Honorable Supt for his able speech, and also the business men of the city who helped us bear our expenses; also those who were so kind as to furnish tbe music. G. S. Miller and laughter, charged with an assault on the <on of T. N. Baker, is in progress in I list ice Pugh’s court. The Umatilla county court has made an order which ignores the provisions of the law passed by the legislature of 1901, in regard to selling lands heretofore pur chased at tax sales. Instead of selling these lands to the highest bidder, the county’ court proposes to get some return from the investment and will lease them instead of selling. The revival services at the M. E. church closed last Sunday evening with a very interesting meeting. Mrs. E. M Barrett who has been preaching for four weeks goes from here to La Grande, where meetings will begin next Sunday evening at the Methodist church of that place of which W. H. Miller, who was pastor last year at Sheridan, is now in charge. At the M. E. church of this city the pastor H. T. Atkinson will preach next Sunday, morning and even ing. Last Wednesday evening about fifty umbers of McMinnville camp Wood mjn of the World went down to North Yamhill with their crack drill team to initiale thirteen new members into Yam hill cimp. About two-hundred wood men were present representing camps from all over the county. After the in itiation all repaired to the banquet hall where a very sumptuous spread had been prepared by the Women of Woodcraft. Toists were responded to by Consul Com mander C C. Marton, W. T. Macy, and Henry Gee from McMinnville camp; Dr. Coffeen, from Carlton; Rev. J. F. Day, from Newberg; F. Ar. Garrison, from Amity; Dr. Everest, from Gaston, and V. W. Pierce of North Yamhill. A very enjoyable time was spent which wound up in a moonlight ride home in the wee small hours of the morning. Jim Everest was displaying a curiosity one day last week in the way of a young hicken endowed with four legs. It’s suspected that it may be a fore runner of be “new hen” which is to play such an important factor in Oregon's diversified industry........... Hon. J. C. Nelson showed ns an interesting paper the other day, upon which, with the exception of two years, 1864 and 1884, was a record of ail the county taxes he has paid into the treasury of old Yamhill, since his first arrival into the land of promise, with the names of the sheriffs to whom the taxes were paid. The first entry is that of 1884, when his taxes amounting to $1.25 were paid to Sheriff J. G. Baker. From that time to the present he has paid to tbe various sheriffs of the county nearly four thousand dollars, which makes a record than which in all probability not many Yamhill farmers esn show a better. —Newberg Graphic, European governments seem in clined to shut their eyes to the fu ture. Without any cause for war other than their own seeking, they contemplate war with apparent dis regard of circumstances. Confident of their ability to float loans for some years longer, they go on adding to expenditures that can only be met by new loans or increased taxation. France heads the list in the magni tude of her public debt, but as it is all held at home, it is more easily borne than smaller debts, tbe inter est of which goes abroad. France owes in round numbers $6,000,000, but every dollar of the interest is distributed among her own people. This enormous debt keeps France in a peaceful mood. As a rule, these small bondholders think twice over a warlike proposition l.ap Clwseg.
