It has been definitely settled that Ore gon stone will be used in the construction of the now poetoffice building at Salem, ami according to a dispatch from Wash ington, the half stone from the Ashland quarries will in all probability tie the stone. The bill appropriating $10,000 for the establishing of an experiment station on the branch asylum lands at Union, Or., passed the legislature. It provides tiiat the appropriation shall not he available for buildings and equipment, but that the sum, with the revenues derived from the land, shall be used for agricultural experiments in any part of eastern Ore gon. The new station is to be managed by the board of regents of the agricultur al college. Messrs. Christenson 4 Houck recently purchased 22,000 pounds of wool from Frank and Al Fletcher of Lafayette, the deal amounting to over $3,000. This is tielieved to be the largest single transac tion in wool ever made in Yamhill conn ty. The Fletcher boys had held the clip nearly a year in the luq>e of a higher price, but instead the price fell oil' sever al cents per pound. Experience in both wool and wheat selling goes to show that in the great majority of eases it pays to sell when the market is at its height. F. A. French, of Portland, brought a small band of Brown Swiss cattle from Portland on Wednesday night'straiu and took them out to hie ranch near this place yesterday. The district school observed Washing ton's birthday on the 22d. House bill No. no, the revised game law, has now passed both bouses and will become a law. While it is not as good as the old law it is perhaps better than none. Under its provisions the sum of $2500 is allowed for deputy game and forest wardens, and the salary of the game warden is the same as formerly, $1200. The open season for Chinese pheasants begins October I and ends De cember 1. The sale of birds is permit ted during the last two weeks of the open season . This is the worst feature of the bill. The majority of sportsmen and farmers do not believe in thus open ing the way for market and pot hunters to slaughter and dispose of these splen did game birds.
