O.R.sN During the weary weeks of war, when everything had to be taken on trust, atid when the daily Santiago death lists pub listed were closely scanned with the knowledge that the name of her brother stood an equal chance of being atuoug the number, probably no oue in Mc Minnville had more cause for anxiety than Mrs. J. G. Eckman. But a letter received Tuesday announced his safety and tells something of hio experience. Sergeant Roy Linville entered the fight as a regular cavalryman from Fort Ri ley, Kan. After leaving Tampa on the first expedition, the first word of conse quence was received from hitn after the surrender, written under date oi July 17. He says: “I ought to/be kicked good and hard for not writing sooner, but wanted to see the stars and stripes float over Santiago before I wrote, and then a person is in great luck to get any materials here. By the way, when you write again put in stamped envelopes. This morning we cavalrymen saddled and went behind General Shafter and about a hundred officers and saw him receive the hand of the Spanish general. The Spanish gen eral offered his sword, but Shafter took his hand. Then the generals on both sides shook hands and 100 cavalrymen presented sabers to tooSpanisli infantry men and they gave us a present. This took place between the lines. Then we rode into Santiago. Every too yards or less the street was blockaded by rifle pits and breastworks of barrels, boxes, etc.,lfilled with dirt. We also ran into three barbed wire entanglements. No one except U. S. soldiers could have taken the streets we saw, and then the artillery would have had to shelled it good. We rode up the rocky street to the “council house” and sat on our horses or dismounted and sat on the sidewalk till almost 12 o’clock; then we were called to attention, faced the build ing and at 12 the American stars and stripes, a little 3-foot tlag, went to the top of the flagstaff. The 9th infantry hand played “Star Spangled Banner,” “Hot Time” and other tunes. I felt a curious thrill go through me as the flag went up and I wanted to yell, but I had to content myself with giving a “present saber.” Then we were split up in squads of five or six and patroled the town for any of our meu. One old reprobate came out and “chingowed” us out of sight. Another, a woman, appeared like she wanted to get us down and beat ns. The Spanish soldiers, though, are as glad as we are. For the last four or five days, till yesterday and to-day, I have had headache and a little fever, but with quinine and shade I managed to get off easy. We were camped then in a low, swampy place and had to sleep in the uiuil or in damp clothes, and twice the water chased us out. We are on a hill now, and I feel O. K. I have been busy since we landed here, and am on duty all the time now. Our troop was provost guard and had the little bunches of pris oners to guard. During the battle I car ried messages and escorted a wagou train up to the front. I also helped Dr. Stone of Riley at his table until t a. m. the first night. It was a fearful slaughter of men that first day. You would see all kinds of wounded all the way from the hospital to the firing line. Men shot twice walking in and the road full of ambulances, wagons and litters full of wounded, and a greater number walking in. I almost said, ‘Give us peace at any price,' but I didn’t. I do say give us no more wars after this. The town of San tiago is built of plaster, 1 call it. The streets are narrow, rocky and stinking. On the road from Santiago to our lines I saw dead horses lying every fifty yards. I beard our entire loss, dead, wounded and missing, was 2,007, hut I suppose ; you can tell better than I can. I don't ' know the Spanish loss, but it must be I great, as they charged our trenches once to pull our men out, but not one got within pulling distance. Good-bye and God keep you. I hope to be home as soou as the war is over.” xri íí i: ron ri mit vrio> LOCAL NEWS. Henry Bills of Tillamook has been in town this week. Chas. Haling is assisting in S. How orth’s drug store.
