Ï ADMIRAL SAMPSON’S FORMIDABLE FLEET. PEN What You Get' The o lee of some poets are rather «iious. The wedding tour is often the calm before the storm. People who have advice to give are never stingv with it. Popular songs are often so popular that they become unpopular. When it comes to Jealousy and crow ing a man is superior to a rooster. A war artist is always successful, even thong it his battlee are drawn. A jolly good fellow is hardly ever classed synonymously with a first- class financier. When a man boasts of having money to burn he will soon have ashes to throw away. Only a small portion of the world loves a lover; the reel of it considers him a chump. A bachelor as a rule is the acme of selfishness, and happy is the woman that fails to get him. Every man intends to have his own way after marriage, but sometimes his wife relieves him of a false impression. —Chicago News. In Ills stxty-oue years of life Admiral George Dewey, the hero of Manila, has seen a great deal of red hot fight ing. lie was born among the green hills of Vermont anil received his airpolnt- inent to the Naval Academy nt the age of 17. When he graduated in 1858 he went witJi the steam frigate Wabash on a cruise in Mediterranean waters. When Fort Sumter was tired ti[xra Dewey was promoted from ensign to lieutenant and assigned to the steam sioop Mississippi, which was to take part in the tierce fighting of the West Gulf squadron. The Mississippi was a side wheeler of seventeen guns, and was commanded by Commander Mul ti uct lion Smith. The West Gulf squad ron won't at once to the Mississippi River to force its way up. The “His tory of Our Navy'1 thus describes the left. Admiral Torter singled him out for special praise. In July, 1863, Dewey was on the gun boats that engaged the Confederates below Donaldsonville, In 1864 be was attached to the North Atlantic block ading squadron, niwigneel to the steam gunboat Agawam. The .Agawam was one of the great mwnt of warships, big and little, that plumped shot into Fort Fisher in December, 1864, and January, 1865. Dewey raeelved his com- missio mis lieutenant commander on March 3, 1865, and served for two years on the European squadron, first on.the steamer Kearsarge and then on the frigate Colorado, the flapship. Tn 1868 he was assigned to duty at the Naval Academy. In 1870 be received his first command, that of the Narragansett, which was employed on special service until 1875. The Pacific survey of 1872-73 was In trust«! to him. After two years as lighthouse inspector and five as secre Invented by the Chinese! Perfected b; Japanese, Named by Portuguese. Frank II. Vizetelly, in “A Chat Abou China” in the Woman’s Home Com panion. writes luterstlngly of the intro duction of fine porcelain into Europe: “The word porcelain, as applied to clilua pottery, originated in Japan dur ing the thirteenth century. The Chi nese, the pioneers in the art of porce lain manufacture, began to make it nearly two centuries before the Chris tian era, and so careful were they to guard the secret of the art that nearly fifteen centuries lapsed before tpeir neighbors, the Japanese, got any In kling of it. But once in their posses sion. the wily Japanese hist no time to profit by theLr knowledge. The few Intrepid navigators of those days brought samples of both Chinese and Japanese ware to Europe, but not until early In tho sixteenth century did a trade In it of any extent take place. Among the early importers were Portu guese traders who had settled on the Japanese coast, and to them, It is claim ed, we owe the word porcelain, derived from the Portuguese pa reelin na, or sucking pig. When the Portuguese traders first saw pieces of Japanese ware they were struck with its translu cence, which somewhat resembled tliat of the cowry shell. The cowry shell, In turn, resembled in shape a small sucking pig, or porcellaua; hence our ‘porcelain.’ ” The Klondvke J : “A Perfect Type of the Highest Order of Excellence in Manufacture. " < %UMs sort of things the men on the Missis sippi experienced when they preceded Farragut up past New Orleans: “The Pensacola and the Mississippi steamed slowly, with their black hulls at regular intervals sheeting tin* air with lurid fire as they replied to the forts. Abreast of St. Philip, where the Confederate tire was hottest, they drew . in so close that the gunners afloat and ’•‘those ashore heartily curat'd each other as they worked.” The Mississippi was with the squad ron again when it ran down past New Orleans on the way back, fair targets for nineteen big guns at close range. / The hardest tight that the Mississippi ever was In wax the one that ended her. The fleet was trying to run by Bort Hudson with its powerful batter- W a None of the squadron got by. The Mississippi ran aground in the fog and smoke and stuck hard and fast. In thirty minutes she was shot full of holes. Her crew climbed into boats on the siiie oposite the forts, and. after setting her on fire, made for the other side of the river under a withering rifle fire. Upon this occyiion Lieut.
