L abor day should be abolished or rechristened. It is a day of enforced idleness to some people who prefer to work and a matter of great in convenience to the public. T he Corvallis Union says it is the intention of Senator Mitchell's friends to keep him out of the sena torial race and run him for governor. It is very doubtful if Mitchell would bother with the governorship, ex cept as a possible stepping-stone to his former place. T he San Francisco Call has proved, by the publication of a fac simile of Mr. Bryan's letter asking for the same, that the popocratic idol rode all over, the Pacific'coast on a rail road pass, on the occasion of his recent visit out here. This is not very important, except that is one of the small items in a large general account, that will in time convince the popocratic mind that its idol has feet of clay. That was all that ailed Mr. Cleveland as an enduring pop ular idol. His feet were of clay. H on . T. T. G eek wanted the Port land collectorship and was given the registership of the Oregon City land office instead. There is said to be little more than a bare living in the land office. In ouropinion it is shab by treatment and seems to demon strate what has often been said in politics, that it doesn’t pay to be always loyal, patriotic and honest. There is no man who more thorough ly deserves a good place than T. T. Geer, and he is as capable as he is deserving, but somehow the po litical gang who manage things are always lighting him. The truth is, Grover Cleveland gave the country a thoroughly and pitifully un-American administra tion. It was alien in character and sympathy. This was shown in all sorts of ways, beginning with the withdrawal of the Hawaiian treaty and permeating the whole adminis tration, and operating as a general frost. American interests were nipped und cut down, if not killed, by that frost. There couid not be any healthy growth of these inter ests. William McKinley is not simply a protectionist. He is every inch an American, and every Ameri can interest responds to the quick ening touch of his Americanism.— Inter Ocean. The Chicago Record prints the fol lowing letter from Governor Lord, of Oregon : “Reply to your recent ques tion, I have to say that, in myopinion, the most important subject to be taught in the American public schools are the common English branches. In my judgment, it is not properly within the province of the state to furnish higher education for the pub lic. &emething must be left for indi vidual ambition and energy, and 1 believe the state does its duty when it provides a gtxxl, common school education.’’ The governor is em inently correct.—Eugene Journal. That depends upon what the gov ernor considers a good common school education. If he is in favor of em bracing more than the “three R s” in the common school curriculum it is evident that his opinions have been influenced somewhat by th«* false no tions thut have sprung up in the northern and eastern states and some of the southern states in the last half century. Our forefathers, some of them, “fit” nobly against the en croachment of higher education in the common school, and log school houses and pine benches were gotxl enough for them. They believed in leaving something for individual ambition and energy. CIRKEXT NOTE AND COMMENT. XV. C. T. 1). t suuty Couventleu.
