The mean-- temperature for the week was G*i de grees, the same as the preceding week; the day temperatures averaged 78 degrees, and the night 53 degrees. The highest temperature during the week was 81 degrees, and the low est 18 degrees. The winds were northerly aud brisk in force. The weather has continued to be favorable for all crops, except for i hops. Harvesting of fall sown wheat and oats continues, and will be fin ished during the coming week, Threshing has commenced in a few localities, hnd reports indicate an excellent crop, The berry is well formed and very plump; the grain will weigh heavier than usual, The wheat that has been threshed is vielding more bushels per acre than 11 usual. Spring-sown wheat and oats are most promising; color is showing, and harvesting of them will begin within ten days. Haying in the coast counties is about finished —a fair crop has been secured. Hops have made good growth, but they i are in a bad condition, owing to the lice. The weather has been favor able to the propagation of the lice, and they are more numerous than usual. In some hop yards no effort is made to spray, in others spraying is active. The outcome of the hop crop is problematical, owing to the presence of the lice in such phenome nal numbers. Cherries are about over. Black berries continue to be plentiful. Peach plums are about over. Colum bia and Bradshaw plums are now ripe. Prunes have commenced to color: t he prune crop promises to be unusually large. Peaches are ripen ing, and they are a much better crop than usual. Applesand pears con tinue their prolific promises. Melons are ripe and are unusually plentiful. Corn continues to make good growth: sweetcorn is an excellent crop, and the markets are filled with it. The general report is, every thing being so prolific this year, that the markets are deficient for every thing except of a nonperishable character. The excellent reports continue as to tiax and sugar beets. The weather conditions this morn ing are favorable for continued fair weather. Lower temperatures are probable from Wednesday to Friday with increasing cloudiness, but no rain, and then clearand warmer from Sunday. AN OPEN LETTER To MOTHERS. Events of late have been full of dis couragement for the advocates of free coinage at the ratio of 111 to 1. Con dition.- sectn. indeed, to have entered into a conspiracy similar to that which made possible “the great crime of 1873.” The argument of the silver- ites based on the assumption of a scarcity of gold did yeoman service iu the last campaign, but the dis coverics in th/> Clondykc fields, promising a considerable addition to the world's stock of its standard monetary metal, seems likely to rel egate that argument to the class of spent ammunition. Much was made also by the silverites of the relation between silver aud wheat prices, but unfortunately for them, while the price of wheat has gone up over thirty cents a bushel since last year, the price of silver has gone down about ton cents an ounce, and in a week, in which we are able to record evidences of a distant revival of bus iness, as indicated in the early arrival of the long promised advancing move ment for the full, silver has touched the lowest point recorded in the American market. Verily, condi tions are unpropitious for t he agita tors in behalf of monetary change. ----- -------------- The Shasta Route Op THE I TO Tftfe All Her Life. Mr. E. D.
