The 12th inst. was Chicago day at
the Atlanta exposition. The pro­
gramme had been arranged for a
military parade, which was to be led
by the Fifth regiment of infantry.
United States army. Col. Koch,
whose command is 'stationed here
was ready to lead his men. when
the governor of the state of Illinois
put in his veto. John P. Altgeld
said he would not ride in any parade
in which the federal troops were part
of the parade, anc, inasmuch as it
was Chicago day, and the presence
of John P. Altgeld as governor was
desired, the troops were left at home,
and John P. Altgeld rode in the
parade.
