Dear Sir: As you are interested in the welfare of Yamhill county and Oregon in general, I thought of send ing you the enclosed letter, written to me by a friend who was out here early this spring, with a view of set tling in Oregon. He went back somewhat unsettled in his mind as to changing his native state for Ore- gon, and agreed to let me know on his return home just what conclusion he had come to. Of course the letter was not in- tended for publication, and I request, in case you publish it, to withhold the names. It is only because the letter is interesting inasmuch as it shows us in the light that others see us. Respectfully, X. Y. Castorla on res Diarrhoea and 5Vin<l Colio. L a C omas , Kan., July 27,1895. ABSOLUTELY PURE “O, well, that don’t cut any fig ure. ” ’ “Then you don’t believe in patron izing your own people?” i “Well, I don’t have to, I don’t owe 1 them anything.” After this conversation I set about to ’ thinking, and arrived at the con clusion that I would be better off ’ staying “back east” myself; for there ( is i the market; there the trader and ' manufacturer has a chance to get the cash and I stand a chance to get ; my share. So here I am, and here I ( am going to stay. Between this catalogue business— j and the Pacific states seem to be a favorite fishing ground for suckers— life insurance and fire insurance; high rates of interest and taxes, no wonder you are not getting along for all of your climate and soil. And if you keep on at the same rate your merchants and most of your farmers will want to emigrate back east presently, that is, those who have enough left to pay railroad fares. Excuse me, for writing so much, and so plainly, but you asked me to give you my impressions, and I have done so. With kind regards to yourself and family, Your J ohn C. ruin! But if you like to take pity on a man who had drunk the cup of pleasure to its bitter dregs and frit tered away a noble career, I am willing to devote the poor remnant of my life to you entirely.” And the woman shook her head and turned aside to hide a smile, saying to herself, “Why, he is even younger than I thought.” Twenty years later he was natural ly 41. He now preferred the circus to French balls, watched baseball games instead of playing poker, and was pretty nearly convinced that there were a great many things which he didn’t know and would probably die in ignorance of. He admired a woman whose age was a temporary 22, whose bright hair was indigenous and whose tense was decidedly future. By this time he had dabbled in obesity cures, developed lead-colored pouches under the eyes, and his hair was grey and scanty. His joints cracked loudly as he stretched forth his hands and paid court to his divinity in the following impassioned tones: “lam a young man, with all my life before me! Although no saint— 1 have a clear record! I feel that I am called to glorious possibilities! Come to my arms—and with me walk down the broad vistas of the futurel” And this young woman also shook her head and turned away to hide a smile, saying to herself: “He must be very old to talk like that!”— Life. them a full swing at fighting fire water. Dayton Herald. About two o'clock Wednesday morning a fire was discovered in the floor of Dr. B. F. Swick’s hop house. The fire was extinguished before gaining headway, with several pails of water. It is supposed the fire originated by a match dropped in the hops by a careless smoker. There are three fruit dryers in operation at Dayton, and all are kept busy day and night—mostly on prunes at this time. D. A. Snyder’s evaporator has a capacity to evapo rate 100 bushels of green fruit a day. The evaporator owned by L. Londen- housen also has a capacity to evapo rate 100 bushels of green fruit a day. A. J. Palmer's evaporator has capaci ty to dry 50 bushels green fruit per day. This adds a good deal to the business of the town, and quite a number of people are in this way given several months employment.
