A Western Wonder.
Gila county, A. T., has located with- !
in its borders a natural bridge which is I
rightly considered as one of the greatest '
natural curiosities in the United States.
It spans Pine creek at a height of about
200 feet from the water surface. Tbe
bridge is of limestone formation, and
the inside of the great arch, which has
a span of 247)^ feet, is smoothly worn
by the water, which in olden times fill
ed Pine creek so full that they were
gorged in their passage under the arch.
The bridge is almost exactly 400 feet
wide at the top and nearly 1,000 feet
in length across the canyon, the 200 foot
measurements mentioned above being

apex of the arch the formation is only
about 6 feet in thickness, and through
this there is a hole large enough to ad
mit the body of a man, and through
which one may look down into the crys
tal depth below. In the immediate vi
cinity of the bridge are numerous cav
erns of small size, some of which have
never been explored. Leading geologists
are of the opinion that the whole of
Pine creek was once an immense cav
ern, and that the bridge described above
is all that now remains of what was for

Some years ago — several hundred
thousand perhaps—a brackish or fresh
water lake existed which extended for
800 miles along the eastern flank of the
Rocky mountains, and many strange
monsters wandered up and down its
shores.
Professor Marsh named one the tri-
ceratops, which means that it wore three
horns on its face. Its skull was enor
mous, measuring in an old individual 7
or 8 feet in length, was somewhat wedge
shaped, and the back and sides of its
neck were protected by a huge fanlike
ruff or projection of bone, extending
from the skull and forming a part of it.
The brain was smaller in proportion
to the size of the skull than in any
known animal. The mouth was a kind
of beak, like that of the turtle, and
similarly 6heathed in horn. Its food was
of the luxurious tropical vegetation
which flourished along the borders of
the great lake.
The animal was about 25 feet in
length and 8 or 10 feet in height, being
considerably larger than the largest ex
