Cowper said of the oak: "Time was when settled on thy loaf a fly could shako thee to the root. Time Las been when tempest could not.” In other words, your children arc very impressi ble just now. Have yon not been surprised some times, months or years after some con versation which you supposed was too i profound or intricate for them to under hand—some question of tho child dem- I onstrated the fact that he knew all about it? Your children are apt to think that what you do is right. They have no idea I of truth or righteousness but yourself. Things which you do knowing at the ; time to bo wrong they take to be light. They reason this way: "Father always does right. Father did this. Therefore this is right. ” That is good logic, but ' bad premises. No one ever gets over I having had a bad example set him. Your ' conduct more than your teaching makes i impression. Your laugh, your frown, i your dress, your walk, your greetings, your goodbys, your comings, your go- ' ings, your habits at the table, the tones of your voice, are making an impression which will last a million years after you are dead, and the sun will lie extin guished, and the mountains will crum ble. and the world will die. anti eternity will roll on in perpetual cycles, but i there will be no diminution of the force of your conduct upon the young eyes that saw it or the young earn that heard it. Your children are soon going out in the world. The temptations of life will rush upon them. Tho most rigid resolution will bend ia the blast of evil. What will be the result? It will require all tho re straints of tho gospel, all the strength of a father’s prayer, all the influence of ' u Christian mother’s example to keep i them. i uii say i t is too early to bring them.
