Lafayette’s popular merchant, D. I. Cork er, was in town last week. W. Breyman, of Salem, was in town yes terday. Mrs. J. J. Shipley, of your place, is in town visiting relatives and friends. Our townsman, A. L. Alderman, will go east with the pioneer excursion party. He left for Portland yesterday. Several parties from this place went to Newberg this morning to attend the Fair at that place, which commences to-day. F. A. Hill's drug store was closed by his Portland creditors, last Saturday night. We havn’t been able to learn the amount of his liabilities. Miss Minnie Call, who has been in Port land. visiting friends, during the past two weeks, returned homo yesterday. F. M. Daniels anil wife, of Scio, were in town one day last week. Born, at this place, Sept. 25th. 1883, to the wife of John Jones, a son. Our enterprising merchant. J. T. Watson, has improved the appearance of his store very much by putting in new shelving and making other improvements. Mr. Clayton Uriah, of the Dalles, and Miss Katie Convert, one of Webfoot’s fair danglit- »rs, were united in marriage at the residence of the bride's parents, last Tuesday, by Rev. John Parsons. Their many friends wish them happiness. They left for The Dalles last Friday. The band from this place ser enaded the happy couple Tuesday night. L loyd . LATAYSTTE Oct. 2,1883. It is probable that before this gets into print, the close of the trial, the verdict and the tragio end of G. W. Smith will be pretty well known all over the country ; and as you will have it published in another col umn, it will bo unnecessary for me to repeat it here. In my last I said that J T Hembiee was up etc.: but your devil of a type setter got it J T Hubert—a man that I never heard of before. Charley Jacobs, who had a fa 11 from the roof of a saw mill—Sampson’s, I believe—is here at Mr Ungerman’s, sick with a conges tive chill, brought on by the fall. Rumor says ho is some better, now. J C Cooper was here all last week, attend ing court, partly as a witness and partly as reporter for the “Oregonian.” Al Snyder, of the Y amhill C ounty R e porter , not to be behind in his business as a gatherer and disseminator of news, attend ed court through the whole of Smith's trial, as his own reporter. Thera is on© item in the Smith case that yuu did not get. I think. I mean a conver sation that Smith had with Rogers, his fel low prisoner. It oould hardly be called a 45onlt- sion, and yet it might be considered as such. He said “ the law makes a crime of an act in one-case, and says it is no crime in nother case. If a rich man tiles to rob a poor man. and is killed in the attempt, it is no crime ; but if he annoys and robs him in another way and the poor man kills him. it is murder. My conscience is clear ; I feel no guilt of murder resting on it.” This may not be the very language used, but it is very near it. As I understand it, the quarrel that re sulted in the shooting of Mrs. Fetch and ended by G W Smith committing suicide, originated in the difference in price of meals furnished to travelers by the two parties one wishing to keep it at 50 cents, the other cutting to 25 cents. Two lives, months of discord and several thousand dollars sacri ficed for such a trifle. Judge Boise opened the regular term of court yesterday at one o’clock with a new grand and petit jury. The term will occupy all week, and then very likely several cases will go over to another term. The late showers were very welcome.— They put an end to the forest fires, cleared up the atmosphere and prepared the ground for plowing. A great deal of sowing was done in the de^t—that is. before the rain, on summer fallow. But now the regular fall business will commence. Already we begin to feel the ( fltoefs of the rain in trade. There are no sales of wheat, except to the mills, ««Rid. a« a consequence, money contin ues very scarce. R R Daniels is out now with his maimed hand. He says it is pretty tough, but is ready to bet that he can turn out the boss flour, if he has only six fingers on two hands to do it with.
