The strike of telegraph opttafois hue
come to an end, au>l ha>. resulted in those
engaged in tho strike going back to
their old positions at the same wages
and to work the same, number of hours
as before. Kegardiug “strikes” the
Portlaud iUtj.aui has the following
well-timed remarks under the heading
of “Ill considered methods.” We
quote:
The operator’s strike is proclaimed a
failure, members of tho Brotherhood
being permitted to return to work
at the old rates wherever the company
will receive them. The result adds
auother. disclaimer to tho idea that
strikes are the laberers’ panacea for real
or supposed ills. If the pay of tele
graphers was in reality so small as to
induce n hardship, such hardship has
hardly been lessened by the loss of .•
month’s pay. Uuless laborers arc pre
pared to abandon one vocation for au
other, it is folly to “quit work” as a
remedy for low wages, From the na-
tore of things craftsmen of any trade
ate u u fitted to work to advantage in
another, and the better workman the
man is at his owu trade tho less he is
qualified to earn living wages at an
other. No mau in middle life, with re
sponsibilities crowded thick upon Litu,
and dependent upon bis owu labor to
discharge them properly, cau afford to
quit one vocation that iusures to him
aud bis a livelihood aud begin an ap
prenticeship in another. The reason
for this is apparent and plainly indi
cates why men who made complaint ot
their wages at telegraphy could not af
ford to quit tho business wheu their
demand for higher wages was not
granted, aud seek other employment.
Unskilled labor uowhero commands
the wages which they had received in
their business as operators, aud few
of them could sparo oitber tho timo
or monev necessary to perfect them
selves iu another branch of skilled la
bor, with at the end promise of better
pay. Not having considered this phase
of the subject carefully, and urged on
by the daily ie:uniug necessities of
lite, u large number of intelligent men
and skilled laborers find themselves
suppliants for what they but now defi
antly threwawuy. Theircowplaiutsway
have been just, but th#ir methods wore
ill considered. That universal failure
waits upon such tnothodsis well attest
ed. Labor must eat; capital quietly
locks its vaults and awaits the laborer’s
mealtime, assum'd of success when
hunger assails. This latest failure of
skilled labor to dictate terms to its em
ployers has imposed more real incon
venience and loss upon the public than
any similar action on record, aud it is
to be hoped that its lessou will uot be
lost upon labor unions throughout tho
country.

According to all accouuts San Fran
