From the air of general debility that seemed to wrap them like a shroud it was easy to prophesy their defeat They did not make a point. Tbe steamer Toledo has made the freight rate from Portland to tills city 20 cents per hundred pounds, delivered. It is now tlie same as the railroad on fourth class rate with the exception of cartage. This increase of 5 cents per hundred lias made an inroad in the steamers buainess, several firms ship. H. 8. Maloney. Her death occurred .December 2, 1893. De ceased was born in East Tennessee in 1855. In 1871 she removed with her people to Weston, this state, where site was married to Mr. Maloney in 1873. In 1877 they came to Sheridan, where she resided up to the time of her death. Mrs. Maloney joined tlie Friends church at Newberg, and was a consist ent Christian, a kiad mother and a lov ing wife. She leaves a husband and nine children to mourn her death, who have the sympathy of all in their be- reavment.—.S'/irr«/« n Sun. Saturday evening just before M. J. Armstrong, grocer, usually closes his store and 'just as lie was counting his cash which he had in a sack, Newt Agee and Alfred Jones entered the store and called for some cheese. After supplying tlieir wants he missed ills sack of money and called for help. Agee started up the street but was caught anil brought back to tlie store and the door locked. Tlie marshal was called in and upon searching the two young men the money was found in the overcoat pocket of Jones, who swears lie does not know how it got there. Tlie young men are of good parents and the matter is a mystery unless it can be laid to ardent spirits of which they consumed considerable dur ing the afternoon. They were locked up in tbe city jail for the night and were taken to tbe county jail Sunday morning. They waived examination and are under $100 bonds. The Carlton Cburier made its appear- Carlton Notes. Itepr.- »cntitlon There. The morning train of Friday brought to this city Geo. T. Myers, E. W. Al len, Col. R. W. Mitchell, ('apt. H. E. Mitehell and Geo. 8. Ratty, citizens of Portland interested iu the Midwinter fair association of Oregon, and desirous of having the state represented at San Francisco. The gentlemen looked around the city and after a bouuteous dinner at the Hotel Yamhill, re|>aired to the court house, where nearly all tlie representative business men of the city aud several prominent farmers and fruit raisers had collected together to listen to the plans of the association to secure a state exhibit. Judge Galloway was elected chair man of the meeting and J. G. Eckman secretary. The meeting was addressed by Mr. Myers, Mr. Allen, Col. Mitch ell and Capt. Mitchell. The plan of tlie association incorporated to ralso money for the pur|>ose of making an Oregon exhibit at the Midwinter, is sell shares of stock at $1 each. The capital stock of the association and the amount of money necessary for a good display is $20,000. There is an unexpended bal ance of the state’s appropriation for the World’s fair of $20,000 and it is the in tention of the association to have the next legislature turn this over to the stockholders of ths association, thus paying them back the money invested. Letters have been written to the hold over senators, and almost to a man they are in favor of appropriating the bal. ance to this purpose. A subscription paper was then passed and three- fourths or more of the people present subscribed. Precinct committeemen were appointed, having authority to appoint sub-members for the sale of stock and the gathering of exhibits. Tlie committee cousists of the following well-known citizens: Chas. Grissen, John Allison, C. E. Hoskins, Dave Stout, Geo. Olds, J. G. Cleland, P. M. Scroggins, Henry Lamson, M. C. Mil ler, M. O. Lownsdale, John Fryer,Phil Witliyeombe, R. L. Harris, Harvey Jones, Dr. Mills and Cy Nelson. The officers of the meeting were made permanent, and tlie commitlee- meu were ordered to report within ten days to the president. Much enthusi asm was displayed and the meeting ad journed. everyone in good spirits. anoe last week. The most attractive ad was Dr. Coffens. The doctor has a good drug store and a good practice. He is well spoken of, especially by tlie 1 ladies. He is a bachelor. One of our citizens found it necessary on account of hard times, to invent a machine. It is called nickle grate and it works null. There are three hun dred prize« from twenty pounds of su gar to a safety pin. The profit is real ized by adjusting tlie tickets, of which the Inventor has the manngmeut, hence the profit. It can be seen in tlie lied Sash and Marble Front. Business in Carlton is as good as in her sister taw ns. The store keepers complain of their clothing wearing out. The telephone operator is a shoemaker, •nd of course he has to sit down, so lie does not complain. . The sidewalk between tlie church and the railroad Is in a bad condition, especially the step at the church plat form, it not being horizontal. It took the feet from under a young gentleman the other day, setting him down very unpleasantly. We fear tliat his neck is shortened, but our town is not incor porated. The B. F. M. 8. hud its annual elec tion of officers last Sunday, which re sulted in electing Marian Smith presi dent; F. C, Elmlund, vice president; Wm. Fryer, secretary; Emile Linburg, treasurer. Prof. Deaeb of the < 'helialem public school paid the B. F. M. S. u visit at its last meeting, stating that he came ex pressly to hear the program, Which was suspended on account of the election. But when the professor came into the young people’s meeting in tlie evening with u lady on his arm, I thought some excuse was belter than none. It seems that the standing committee was elect ioneering for reappointment by making out an everlasting program. They put on tlie program for the first Sunday in January all the members except a few. If Prof. Deaeb will come the first Sun day in January he will not be disap pointed for we are expecting a good program, especially in singing. J. W. Scott is leader and Ills wife organist. They deserve great credit for making these meetings a success. Ku K‘J. TUBERCOLOSIS IN WASHINGTON oa-i-ri b 'lulc.hr> and His Internal Machine.
