Three new students this week, Messrs, Coak and Witbern, of Portland and Miss Harris, of Amity. Prof. Browiison attended a board I meeting in Portland oue day of last week. Miss Mattie Walton, of class of '93 ; will soon sail for Japan, she being the , second female foreign missionary to , emerge from McMinnville college walls. Rev. George Hill, recent pastor of Al bany Baptist church and a former stu dent of McMinnville college, delivered a lecture en “China,” last Saturday. He also preached Sunday. The president informs us that we are henceforth to have ample grounds for field sports. The students were startled when tbe professor announced that the Friday night entertainments would be resum ed, and theH unceremoniously read the program for the flrat one, Nov.. 17th. There will be a debate, “scrap basket,” oration, etc. There will lie a state oratorical con test held at Eugene the last Friday in February, 1894, and each college of the state is expected to send her best ora tors there to contend for the supremacy of tbe state in oratory. McMinnville students are preparing for tbe local contest which will be held the first Friday of February in the college chapel. It is to be hoped that these contests may result in the best exhibi tion of student oratory ever known in McMinnville and that it may be tbe means of drawing the colleges of the state into closer relations. The Philergian society has held a bumber of splendid meetings. There are some new students who have not yet joined. There aro no students who can afford to go to college and not grasp tile opportunity of learning to Ex press their thoughts to others and in public. This society offers literary and parliamentary practice which cannot be acquired from books or any other society in the college. The society meets Saturday evening. Get all stu dents to come with an intention to join. All interested in such work are wel come. Following is the program: Music, society; uddress, Lou Lynch; recitation, Mr. Blood; reading, Will Scott; quartet; essay, May Million; college newspaper, Aiderman, editor; music society; debate.
