The Narrow Gauge Turned lulu u Stan Say* the People* ef Oregon Wart tlie Money of their Father«» dard Gauge System In ou. nay. Fur th- Weak Endlu» Tu.aday, Auf. 1, 1S93—U. A. Signal Servie«. The Salem correspondent of the New York Herald received from that paper oil Monday a telegram directing him to interview Governor l’ennoyer, “as in a iiosltion to voice the sentiment of the state of Orgon touching the repeal of tlie Sherman silver law” and wire tlie governor’s response. The corre spondent saw the governor who gave him the following statement: “The people of Oregon.fuvor'tlie re peal of the Sherman law because it treats .silver as a commodity. Silver, which is, equally with gold, a recog nized money metal of the constitution, should be treated the same as gold, by having like privileges of coinage and by living made a full legal tender. The power to coin money was conferred upon congress, and that power carried with it an imperative obligation to coin both gold and silver on equal terms and to make both full legal tender money. The states would never have surrendered to congress tlie important prerogative of coining money if they had ever supposed that it would have pursued the policy of the last twenty years. Oregon is almost a unit in favor of a return to the policy of our fathers, which coined both gold and silver and made both a full legal tender.” Tlie governor would no doubt con tend that the army of the United States could whip the combined armies of the world if itshould come to a fight. According to bis idea the fight for sil ver against the combined, financial policy of Europe bears no likeness to the above illustration. The past week was the warmest so far tills year, thu mean temperature va rying from 68 to 72 degrees, while the maximum temperature ranged as high us 95 degrees. The mouth of July was from 2 to 4 degrees cooler than usual. No raiu fell during the week and gen “rally a cloudless sky prevailed. The weather was extremely favora ble to the cutting of hay and the ripen ing of full sown grain, aud injurious to root crops and to late spring sown grain. The buy is about all cut aud is housed for the winter. Harvesting of fall sown wheat and oats is in progress In every county und the correspondents report that the yield is better than was expected; fully up to former years in quality aud quantity. The late sown oats and wheat are badly in need of rain; the warm weather having a ten dency to mature them before they have attained a sufficient height. Corn and root crops are also in need of rain. Po tatoes have a line growth and will be a large crop; but the yield would be im proved by more rain. Hops are grow ing rapidly, burrs are forming; the arms are fine and healthy. There is a remarkable absence of lice in most counties, though in a few sections are sulticient to warrant spraying; if they are not more numerous before the close of the present week, it can safely be expected that there will be little dam age done by lice this year. The codlin moths have made their appearance more numerously in some apple or chards than they heretofore have been. Tomatoes are in bloom: peas and lieans are a good crop. All vegetables are doing well, especially where they have been properly cultivated, but raiu would materially improve them. The cultivated blackberries are ripening. Peaches are ripe in the southern coun ties. There has been no improvement in the fruit prospects and the yield will be about one-half a crop, with the total product, due to]increased acreage above that of former years. For some time the Southern Pacific company bus been preparing to change the east side narrow gauge line to a broad gauge. Some time ago they laid a third rail on the road from Portland to Dundee, it being necessary to have u narrow gauge road in order to hold tlie right of way. On lust Sunday six men to the mile were distributed along the truek from Dundee to Airlie and to Sheridan and the work of spreading the rails to the standard gauge wus ac complished iu the one day. The out side spikes for both rails bad been placed in position during the week. Monday tlie broad gauge train started on the regular time and made all points on the line.' The road is rough aud ill the course of time will l>e fitted with new iron. The old project of building the road from Lafuyette to St. Joeugaiu comes up and is receiving some attention. With this strip of road built and Junc tion and Corvallis connected, McMinn ville would have tlie best railroad facll- tles of any town in the state outside of Portland. The warmest [weather this year pre vailed during the] past week, the mean temperature ranging from 70 to 78 de grees, while the maximum tempera ture was from 90 to 102 degrees the last two days of July. No rain has fallen and the sky is almost continuously cloudless. The] weather has’been favorable to the cnring'of .the first crop of alfalfa, which is now being stacked; the ground has been irrigated for the sec ond crop. The weather is also favora ble to the maturing of the fall sown grain and the harvesting of it. In the Columbia river valley fall wheat har vesting will be ill .full blast this week. Tn Union aud other counties east and south of the Blue mountains wheat harvest will not]|begin for two weeks or more. What] fall sown wheat that has been cut.has’y ¡elded better than was ¡expected. Umatilla county pro duces betweenltwo and three million bushels of wheat and from a corre spondent who traveled in a buggy over forty miles of the wheat section the fol lowing is learned. “We are agreeably surprised to find the wheat so promis ing. With a few exceptions the crop is good; the straw will not be long, but the berry will be plump and the yield good. Tfio spring sown crop of grain is beyond any damage from the weath er. I have 1800 acres in spring grain which will yield at least 20 bushels to the acre. Harvest hands are very plenty.” The prospects in Morrow, Gilliam and Wasco counties are good. Sherman county will have good yields. While the yield per acre may not be up to that of 1891, total product will equal or exceed it. In that year eastern Ore gon produced six and western Oregon nine million bushels of wheat. Grass hoppers are doing considerable dam- ago in Grant county. The hay crop which has about all been secured, ex cept the succeeding alfalfa crops is very heavy. Th« fruit ¡prospects are good, though the yield per acre will be re duced. Peaches are ripening nicely. At this period of the year the uiid- summer.rain seldom falls except from an occasional thunder storm, hence rain need not be expected during the coming week. The temperature will remain warm. B. 8. P ague , Observer. Midsummer Sale Those coming first will be most certain to get % fit in clothing, as the present price is closing the stock out very fast. A.
