Wright, Goucher and Galbreath have fine prune orchards on tlie hills west of the Ross ranch. Tlie trees are in fine condition and we wonder that more of our eitizeus have not seen the profit in this industry. In three years or so the proprietors will lie receiving a large return ou tlie investment. Care has been given the young trees and without doubt these orchards are as fine as can be found in the country. According to reports the little city of Sheridan, south of us, will have a little excitement on next Saturday evening. It is announced that Joe Dowd, of Sa lem, and Gid Ely, of Tillamook, will fight a twenty round contest, with five ounce gloves, fora purse of $50 and gate receipts. It seems that all the towns are sporty now, and McMinnville Is not behind as several of the young men of this city are wearing beautiful black eyes at the present moment. Memorial services were held at the opera house Suuday, the G. A. R post and the W. R. C. attending in a body. The house was well filled and the pro gram was interesting and well ren dered. The sermon was preached by Rev. O. B. Whitmore and was an able effort. The stage was decorated in keeping with the exercises and taking the program in its entirety we hardly see how a more pleasant hour could have been spent by anyone than by at tending the services. The new road to the coast is com pleted so that a wagon can go into the mountains some 15 or 20 miles from Mc Minnville. The road goes through a fine body of timber and several persons from this city have located claims in it. Before another month passes it will be possible for teams to go the entire dis tance to the coast without trouble. New fishing grounds have been open ed up on Testament creek and the Big Nestucca and the road is already being patronized by fishing parties from the city. C. J. Burn, of Portland, was arrested Tuesday for being drunk. When ar rested he was engaged in the pleasant occupation of driving a horse to death. Up and down Third street he went until he became an eyesore and the marshal pulled him. He was accom panied by his wife who was attempt- ing to keep him away from whiskey. He resisted arrest, but with the aid of Ed Warren liewas landed in tlie calaboose where he remained until yesterday morning. His little fun cost him five dollars and costs. Meadow lake resort is one of the fin est fishing places in Oregon. This is substantiated by the large strings of fine trought caught on the lake. Last Saturday, Mr. Hibbs, the proprietor, brought to this city 106 of the speckled beauties that averaged ten inches in length. Lovers of trout fishing pro nounce the sport grand and better than anything else it is so easy. The lake is two miles long and is nearly u half mile in width and the trout are caught from a boat, tho fish taking the fly. Mr. Hibbs is thinking of giving a three days picnic at the resort, cover ing the fourth of July. Two Bravo La«l«. The balloonist who has been In the city for some time past, and has made two ascensions, leased the balloon to Nile Davidson and A. Simpson for an Ascension Sunday. The boys stated that they had suud enough to go up aud the people of the city raised money enough to pay all expenses. The boys spent Sunday morning in tights and white faces, waiting for the balloon to be inflated, but did not back out as was expected. It was agreed between them that Davidson should make the parachute Jump and Simpson was to stay with the balloon. After consid erable preliminary work the balloon was inflated and the beys tied on, Da vidson on the parachute and Himpson above him on the balloon. The bal loon was cut loose and the boys started amid the howls of the multitude aud the tears of their friends. Tlie balloon soared like a great bird into the blue empyrean and the hearts ef the on lookers thumped audibly. It was a ease of death or fame to the brave boys who were suspended between heaven aud earth. They went up, up, up, up, until the immense height of forty feet had been reached, when the balloon began to descend. Now was the crit ical point. Would Davidson have the sand to cut loose the parachute and drop, drop like a bird to the ground? No, he held fast and descended with the balloon. As he struck the ground he loosened himself and the balloon because of the loss of weight soared heavenward again with the brave Simpson attached. Up it went until It reached an altitude of 100 feet, when it came down. The confounded thing had not been properly Inflated. As the demonstration did uot end with mangled remains and a coroner’s in quest, the populace pronounce It a liz zie, but tlie parents of the young men are happy. As a demonstration of nerve on the part of the young men it was a success and they say that they will try it again to show that their part in the matter was one of faith and that they did not know the balloon was not properly inflated when it was cut loose. This not necessary. They had better conclude to win fame upon terra firma, uot in tlie air. OREGON AT THE FAIR. A JEFFERSON CLUB. VII—AMENDMENTS. Wandering down the aisles of the immense building devoted to the dis play of fruits in the great White City one sees many magnificent collections. The frulte of Manitobia as well as Florida can be seen at a glance. A wealth of fragrance greets the nostrils and a scene of beauty delights the eyes. The extreme north and the extreme south has displayed productions that defy the imagination. And to think that the finest display amongst it all comes from the state of Oregon, is u pleasure that is only appreciated by the Oregoulon who views it. The display differs materially from any other in the building. No decoration has been ex pended upou it; no gingerbread work has been done. The display is simply a collection of fruit in all its kinds and variety in quantity. Where Michigan and Missouri have one apple Oregon has twenty. The excess of quantity over tlie exhibits of the other states gives the sightseer the impression that the state is prolific in fruit. A table in tlie center of the hall built in pyra midal form and another against the east wall of the building is covered with all the varieties of fruit grown in the state of Oregou, in green, dried and pre Third Street, McMinnville, Oregon. served state.
